    kolsch/alt beer question

you can lager in the primary. I wouldn't lager it for 6 months in the primary, but 1 month shouldn't hurt.

    Fermenting

it can take a good while, sometimes over a full day before it really takes off noticeably. also, if you are using a bucket and trying to tell if its going just by if the airlock has bubbles in it, that is not a good way to do it. the bucket lid sometimes doesn't seal airtight, and the co2...

    Hobgoblin... really?!

question about the recipe posted earlier. .6 oz of cane sugar? that doesn't sound like enough to do anything. is the . supposed to be there?

    Oxi Clean

I have the versatile oxiclean. I got it for cleaning some gunked up bottles I got free. even using less of it than recommended, it was a real pain to rinse off. it left the bottles with a weird slick feel. not just wet, but kinda slime like. with enough rinsing it came off, but it took quite...

    Replacing cascade with centennial

for 20 and 5 minute additions I wouldn't worry about the aa %, just sub the cents in.

Asking for it... But still want opinions

have any dry yeast on hand? you could just go with it. if it is infected, your porter will be something like the old traditional ones where they stored it in big wooden vats and it picked up some sourness. but there is a chance that it's fine. you could taste a sample, but I don't know if...

    Hangover?

its all the same with me, no matter what alcohol causes it. if I drink enough water, no hangover. not enough water, hangover. doesn't make a difference if its home brewed beer, commercial beer, wine, liquor or any combination, I get the exact same hangover.

imperial red ale - need help

if a hop is referred to as a bittering hop, that is just what it is most commonly used for. it doesn't mean it can't be used for other additions with good results. if the brewery says they use them for the dry hop, I see no reason for you not to.

Looking to learn grain flavors fast

only problem I see with fermenting in the bottle and then priming and capping is blowoff. you might not end up with a full bottle when it is time to cap.

    Who here doesnt hate BMC?

I like some BMC. I don't like Budwieser/Bud Light, but did enjoy the Budweiser Project 12 variety pack. Miller High Life and Icehouse are options when I'm too cheap to buy something more expensive. Coors and Michelob are quite tasty. I drink Miller Lite when I visit my sister, because that...

    Avoiding bees while brewing

get every bees worst nightmare, Winnie the Pooh. With him around, the bees will be too busy defending their honey to bother you.

Does anyone stir plate a primary?

Papazian claims agitating the fermenter will cause fusels and other problems. this wasn't in "The complete joy of homebrewing" but his other book. I've never tried it, and never saw a reason to.

    pvc

cpvc is used for hot water. get that instead of regular pvc.

    Sharing Golden Blonde Experience

using local honey helps with allergies to plants and pollen. it doesn't help allergies to dog fur or anything. I know people who eat a spoonful of local honey every day and they swear it helps. as for your beer, you did let the honey ferment out before bottling right? if you didn't, get the...

    Deducting Home Brew Expenses

can I deduct the time I spent reading this thread from my taxes?

    Fermentation done 2.1% abv?

what temp is it? too cold could cause the yeast to stall.

    1%?!

might depend on the ingredient. 1% peat malt, I think you could probably taste. especially if it was all pale 2 row and the 1% peat.

    Robust porter

I love porters. I made Midwest Supplies porter, which is prety good, and I've done a coffee porter which is incredible.
