White ring of something around carboy shoulders

I was wrapping up bottling my IPA yesterday when I realized I had 20 minutes to shower and get to by buddy's house to watch the Charger game. In a hurry, I filled my 5g carboy up with Oxyclean and let it soak. I got back to it today (about 30 hours later) and have a white ring around the...

Recipe critique please - Ruination knockoff

Thanks for the reply, Yankee. The recipe I was basing this off of is: 6.6 lbs Northwestern gold (light) malt extract syrup 2 lbs Northwestern gold (light) dry malt extract 1 lb 2-row Pale 1 lb Crystal Malt 15L Steep grains for 45 min @ 149 36 AAU Magnum 60 min 15.7 AAU Centennial 0 min 21...

Recipe critique please - Ruination knockoff

Ok, so if I drop the Magnums from 2.5 oz down to 2.25 and skip the 1oz Centennial at 5mins and add it at flameout instead, that should get me more inline with the BYO recipe (and closer to 105 or 106 IBU IIRC - Beersmith is on my computer at home). Does that sound more reasonable?

Complete list of mini-fridge models to convert to kegerators

Are there any mini fridges that can hold 3 cornies and a #5lb tank? I wanted at least 3 on tap but was thinking I'd have to go the keezer route to make that happen. If there are fridges that hold 3 though, I may get to kegging sooner than expected. :rockin:

Recipe critique please - Ruination knockoff

Thanks r2. This is largely based off of the BYO recipe.

    Replacing 6.5g primary bucket seal

I brewed a Scottish Red Ale on Xmas Eve and have it sitting happily at 68* in my 6.5g primary. I'm not concerned about fermentation, I can see a good 2-3" thick layer of krausen through the bucket, but oddly, I've gotten absolutely 0 airlock activity with this beer. I'm assuming that means...

Recipe critique please - Ruination knockoff

Hey guys. This is my first shot at piecing together a recipe rather than buying a kit. I'm calling this a knock off as opposed to a clone because I took several Ruination clone recipes out there and, with my extremely limited knowledge, tried to combine them in Beersmith to come up with...

    Are my hops toast?

Yeah, they were still vacuum sealed. Thanks guys. Panic averted! :mug:

    Are my hops toast?

I brewed my fourth batch today and realised that I'd left the hops unrefrigerated with my grains in my wine cellar which is independently air conditioned and maintains a temp of 60 degrees. I went ahead and brewed anyway thinking I could take some advice from you guys and maybe moderately dry...

    To dry hop or not...

I've read on this forum countless times not to fear the StarSan foam. I resisted the urge to rinse my freshly sanitized seconday before racking the beer to it and wound up with what you see below. Somebody please put my mind at ease and tell me this is what you guys were referring to.... :cross:

    To dry hop or not...

Thanks guys. I think I'll start off with 1oz this time around and try bumping it up a little with the next batch. The recipe doesn't call for dry hopping at all so I know I'll get a little extra kick out of just the 1oz.

    To dry hop or not...

Gents, I picked up 2oz of Amariillo to dry hop this brew (would like to rack it tonight) but I'm thinking that's too much to dry hop after perusing the forums. Should I go with 1oz? 1.5? 2? Thanks!!

    Watered down taste pre bottling?

Gents, With much help from this forum, I bottled my first batch of homebrew tonight. The only thing that has me a little concerned is that I tasted the sample I took for a final gravity reading and it tasted a little watered down. Not bad, certainly not infected (woo hoo!), but maybe...

A beginning brewers dissertation...reinventing the wheel, impatience, and overdrafts.

Great read, very funny. I'm curious though, what was your schedule for adding LSD to the boil? Last 2 minutes? :P I've done the same with other projects - built it myself, learned a lot, spent too much, but in the end wound up with a product comparable from a quality and function perspective...

DME or dextrose for bottling sugar?

Thanks for the tips guys and for the link, Sedge!

DME or dextrose for bottling sugar?

Hey folks, I'm bottling my first batch tonight. It's a nut brown ale from Brew Organics. They sent a small bag of DME to use for priming but I cannibalized it for a yeast starter for a batch of IPA I've got going. I don't have the full recipe on hand, but is there any reason to use DME...

    Infected commercial beer

I just tasted (and immediately dumped) my first infected commercial brew. It was a Nectar Ales IPA. 3 bottles into a sixer and the 4th was nasty! Super sweet banana taste. The 5th is fine. Hey, atleast I know what to hope my first batch doesn't taste like! The dog like it though! :)
