Did I rack to secondary too soon?

I've stuck a couple by racking to secondary too early. I wouldn't worry about it because that is only a couple out of dozens of batches... I would start skipping the secondary. It has made my life much easier. I find it cleans up a bit better the longer you keep it on the yeast cake. That and...

    The Pol

Try the Brewtroller forum. He is on there all the time spreading the knowledge and solving problems for the noobs... I always enjoyed the Pol, even when he was a dick. That seems to be a default personality type for pilots. My way or the highway. Even I suffer from it despite my best...

    Nottingham

Notty is my old standby. Works great and is cheap. I used to hydrate, but just started sprinkling it in instead. Doesn't make much difference as far as I can tell. I wouldn't bother hydrating... Even dry I've had it kick off like a donkey.

    Bimbo Bread

LOL. I forgot about that. "*******... They'll kick you in the face" :rockin: I too thought that Bimbo Bread was exclusively Mexican. All I can say is we don't have Bimbo commercials in Canada...

    Sodium Metabisulfate in kegs

+1 to that. It would take a longer period of time to see damage. Before I read about not using it on kegs I did the same all the time (it works so well to clean grungy kegs). Once I forgot to dump one out and it sat full of solution for a week. No visible damage. That was a couple of years...

Is beer supposed to be refrigerated?

I think its the 'something' as opposed to conditioning... I'm guessing it is to cold crash any remaining particulate matter out of the beer. I also find that I have chill haze if the beer has only been in a few days. Leave it in there a week or more and there is no longer any haze. Probably a...

How many Cornies do you own?

Wow... Just wow. I think we have the King of Cornies right here! 150! That sir is pure awesome. I've got serious envy. I only own 8. Four in the kegorator and four ready to rotate in. Need more as it doesn't provide much of a buffer if all kegs in the fridge blow out near the same time.

Counter-Flow Wort Chiller - Lube Not Needed (sorta)

Excellent idea! Thanks for sharing that. I went with soap. The last five feet were a total pain in the butt. I won't be doing that again anytime soon hopefully...

Thanks so much for that link Salty! So used to Canucks being SOL on good sources...

Belgian Golden Strong Ale Duvel Clone

I noticed his absence too. I hope the man is OK, just not posting for some reason... My Duval clone is nothing close too. I will keep on working on it.

    Crazy yeast and oilslick issues

QFT. I get crazy oil slicks on highly hopped beers. I believe that the resins are the cause as well....

    Welding food equipment

Kladue is right on the money as usual. Walter makes a similar disc system if you can't find the 3M. Its what I roll. TIG is the process of choice. Done properly there shouldn't be any need to really grind anything- the finished weld should not be porous anyway. Be sure that your welder...

Shiny New Mill... To Motorize or Not to Motorize...

I don't see why you can't. My setup is the inverse as far as pulleys because I have a motor. It should work the other way around. The only problem might be the torque required to turn your hand crank. Imagine what it would be like to turn the Crankenstein if it was three times harder. If you...

    bottling methods

I find that if I minimize headspace in the bottle most of my beers will carbonate sans priming sugar. It is sort of hit and miss but works most of the time. That said I've made some sweet bottle bombs by cutting it too close. Be careful. I do it to retain some samples when most of the batch...

All grain brewing cheaper than extract

Get some sort of heat shield for around the burner. You will double the amount of batches. I usually get 7-8 AG batches from a tank. Half the time it is doing 90 min boils too. I will still maintain that regardless of cost AG owns Extract simply due to flavour. I still can't believe that I can...

Building a motorized grain mill. Questions.

I use a 1725 rpm motor with my JSP MaltMill. Works OK with a 1 1/2" driver and 9" driven. Keeps it about the max 300 rpm Jack recommends (~290 rpm IIRC). It doesn't throw grain at all. But with the speed I sacrifice a bit of torque so I can't dump more than a few inches deep in at a time into...

Beer is carbed, too much head- keg lines 5'

I can do better than anecdotal thanks to buying my taps from a professional supply house. The guy who helped me was putting together a eight tap assembly for one of the biggest nightclubs in town when I walked in... As usual Bobby is right on. Two psi is a good rule of thumb. I was told that...

    Delayed bottling

Wait and see if it works is my vote. I bottled a batch while drunk (well more drunk than usual lol) and forgot sugar completely (doing a batch concurrently and distracted). I was going to dump them but got lazy as I didn't need the bottles at the time. They sat for about ten weeks before I...

Alberta bans extra-strong beer over binge risk

I don't believe Four Loko and the like are even legal for sale in Canada at all. I've never seen it FWIW. We have some strange laws about what beverages can contain caffeine. I know back a few years ago soft drinks could only have it if they were some sort of cola. Our Mountain Dew had no...

    New Replacement for March Pump

What was with the "Walter" in quotes thing? I don't see anyone using other members names in quotes. Is that some sort of subtext I'm missing? I don't see the advantage of stainless over polysulfone myself. I think alcohol will kill me long before polysulfone will. YMMV. The Chugger looks like...
