At what point did your homebrew go from good to great?

Well, based on this thread, my next project is a son of fermentation chiller, which I should have it complete by this weekend. I just find it interesting how some things about brewing you find out way too late in your brewing career, that could have changed the whole game. Like temperature...

    Hop Dry picture tutorial

how critical is it to keep the hops out of direct sunlight? I have hops drying on a screen with a fan on the bottom of the screen, but I don't have a cover to keep any light out, because I figured it would help keep the moisture in rather than out. They are inside a shed, with two windows, but...

At what point did your homebrew go from good to great?

That's the other thing I was going to try on the next brew is campden tablets, I've really been working on perfecting a pale ale recipe, because darker beers can easily hide any flaws that I might have in brewing, but the pale ale will be tougher to hide anything. After I get the pale ale down...

If I spent all of this time improving my cooking skills...

Actually, the wife does not drink any beer at all, and wouldn't touch veal with a ten foot stick. I guess that means I need to give my cooking a good kick in the pants!!! On a side note, I am an avid woodworker, and the majority of furniture that I build is for her/our house, so it all works...

Will my brewing come to a screeching halt if I become a dad?

All of the fathers out there, do you still find enough time to brew even though you have a family? We are going to be starting a family soon, and I am extremely excited about it, but in the back of my mind, I'm preparing myself to saying goodbye (for the most part) to brewing and woodworking on...

If I spent all of this time improving my cooking skills...

Seriously though, I spend a lot of time trying to improve my brewing skills, different techniques, buying better brewing equipment, using better ingredients, but when it comes to cooking dinner for the wife, it is pitiful. And I was thinking if I spent that time improving my cooking skills, I...

Gotta Be A Better Way of Getting DME Into a Flask...

I found the same problem too, and found a quick solution. Fill a plastic cup with 1/2 to 3/4 of your total water, put it in the microwave for 1:30 min, and then mix in the DME. The hotter water will dissolve the DME faster, pour the mixture in the flask, and then you can just add the leftover...

At what point did your homebrew go from good to great?

Thanks for all of the replies. I wanted to get a good idea of where I need to improve in my brewing, and I believe now it is in fermentation temperature control, water profile, and recipes. I'm still learning how to read recipes and see if they will be really good, but I've had a share of...

At what point did your homebrew go from good to great?

It would seem that either equipment, recipe, technique, ingredients, all of these come into play when brewing a great beer. And as you progress, your technique improves, you get better equipment, you get a little better with each batch. But has anyone had an experience in their homebrewing...

what to do with no buds on hop crown yet?

So i have a 2 year old Centennial hop plant, I bought it last year and grew to be the tallest of the three hop plants. But now this year there is no growth on the hop crown at all. All of my other plants are doing great, 3 feet tall, so this is making me mad. The hop crown is sticking above...

Time between crushing grains and using them

Sorry, I should have clarified. The grains are kept in a brown paper bag that the LHBS puts them in. So if I forsee a long time before brewing, should I put them in a plastic freezer type ziploc bag and put them in the freezer?

Time between crushing grains and using them

I typically do extract brews with steeping grains, and I crush the grains at the local homebrew shop when I buy the ingredients. But I typically have to wait a week before I can actually brew the beer. How much freshness am I losing by not using the crushed grains for a week? Thanks

White spots on inside wall of bottled beer

I bottled a Pale ale about 3 weeks ago, kept it at room temperature for 2 weeks to carbonate, and then put it in the basement for a week. I brought up a bottle a few days ago, put it in the fridge to cool it, and tried it the next day. It had great head, nice carbonation, decent taste (though...

Clone of the Black Butte Porter

Brew Your Own magazine has a clone recipe of Black Butte Porter in the special 150 Classic Clone Recipes magazine. Your local homebrew shop should have a copy of the magazine on hand or one for you to buy. Let me know how it turns out, I'm thinking of trying a porter this fall.

St. Rogue Red Ale recipe critique

I am thinking about making a beer in the style of Rogue's St. Rogue Red Ale. This will be an extract recipe with steeping grains. Actually this is my first time making a recipe, as I just took parts of a lot of recipes I looked at online. Anyways, what do you guys think, and what would you...

Frustrated with extract brewing, considering building a mash tun

Well I tried both beers last night (The Pale Ale and Fat Tire Clone), and they didn't taste as bad as when I tried the sample after bottling. The Fat tire is close to 2 weeks in bottles, and the pale ale is 1 week in bottles, so I do understand that the beer is still really green. The pale ale...

Frustrated with extract brewing, considering building a mash tun

I am overwhelmed by the great advice and encouragement from everyone, I really appreciate it. I live in Portland, OR, and the first 4 brews I just used tap water for the wort, and pre-boiled tap water for topping it off. The last two brews I used pre-boiled carbon filtered tap water (brand...
