I think it does just a bit for me but I never did a side by side exbeeriment to be sure.

skimming before boil. anyone do it?

It probably doesn't make a huge difference whether you skim or not but I feel it's just one of those little things that adds up overall to producing a great beer over just good beer. I get some small grain particles and flour with my system and skimming removes most of this.

    Single Decoction Question

Look up "Schmitz Decoction" it a single decoction that boils most the grain in one step and produces similar results as a double or triple decoction with half the time.

How long in Primary and why?

Same exact thing Ive been doing with great results but since this is a hobby I'm going to change things up and go with a more traditional method. I'll ferment a 50 for 2 weeks, slowly lower to 39 and hold for another 2 weeks all in primary then filter, carb and condition for a few more weeks.

    Bru'n Water and Bohemian Pilsner

I think one of the reasons you can get away with less calcium is the malt naturally contains enough calcium and other minerals for yeast health. I've been using this approach and it has made my light lagers much better.

Looking For Tips And Suggestions On Filtering Beer

So far no, but I've only tapped into one of my 3 beers I've filtered and it was the 5 micron filter which let some yeast through. I've heard that filtering down below .5 micron can strip flavor but also heard that can be compensated by recipe formulation.

Looking For Tips And Suggestions On Filtering Beer

Thanks for the info. I was a little surprised the filter worked by gravity as well. I actually had to slow it down some. I cold crash for a few days before filtering so yes the beer is pretty clear. Maybe filtering only 2.5 gal also has something to do with my success? I'd like to keep it simple...

Looking For Tips And Suggestions On Filtering Beer

Cool, probably buy a case of 50 from you guys in the near future. So what absolute filter do you think compares to a 1 micron nominal? Do you think a 1 micron will remove all the yeast?

Thanks for the advice Buckeye. Do you have a good source for bulk 1 micron nominal filters?

    Full Mash Decoction

Look up Schmitz Decoction, it is a single decoction method that boils all the grains. Its easy and a lot less time consuming than a double or triple decoction. I've been going back and forth between this decoction and step mashing to see if there's any difference in my lagers and have to say I...

Looking For Tips And Suggestions On Filtering Beer

I've been thinking of getting a washable absolute 1 micron filter but want to see how the nominal 1 micron works first. I found some deals on EBay where I can buy in bulk for about a couple bucks each. That's worth it to me instead of the headache of cleaning and storing a washable.

Looking For Tips And Suggestions On Filtering Beer

Another update. After 4 weeks beer tastes great, clean, smooth and malty. Finished off the keg and checked for sediment and there was a little bit, much less than no filter but a 5 micron does not take out all the yeast. Last two batches I used a 1 micron so in a month or so we shall see if...

    U Fleku Recipe (Bohemian Dunkel)

I brewed this all grain recipe a few months ago but cut back on the Caramunich and Carafa a bit. It turned out awesome, very smooth, and malty rich. I got another batch fermenting now.

    Lager Slurry Reuse Question

No starters, I reuse the slurry from my primary fermenter. I swirl the fermenter a bit then pour the slurry into a sanitized mason jar. I keep the slurry in my fridge and pitch it into my next beer the day after kegging.
