Help Me Figure Out How to Brew With Back Problems

If you want to start all-grain brewing, using a march pump to move wort or water from the HLT, MLT or Kettle will save a ton of heavy lifting. Use a charcoal filter on a garden hose it you have decent tap water, as that will make filling up HLT/MLT a lot easier. For extract the above will work...

How Much Money Is There To Be Saved?

You only really save money making barleywines, imperial stouts and other "bigger" beers. A good imperial stout starts around $6 for a 22oz bottle, and goes up from there. The cost for a 5 gallon batch of imperial stout is around $35-$50 depending on ingredients, which makes 29 of those 22oz...

    70-Quart Coleman Xtreme Marine Manifold

I have the same cooler mash tun, but I batch sparge using a braided stainless hose. My efficiency kinda blows, so I have been thinking about building a manifold like yours. Batch sparging is easy, but I would think you should be able to easily build another manifold to fly sparge.

What makes an IPL different then an IPA... yeast?

You could always add a ton of dry hops to it in the keg, around 1oz per gallon. That would allow you to lager it properly and give you a ton of hop aroma.

WLP 630 Limited Release Berliner Weisse

I just transferred my berliner weisse to secondary yesterday for a few months of bulk aging. I had no trouble showing activity within 12 hours of pitching. I also fermented rather high (76 degree) since I have read that lacto loves the higher temps. I'm hoping the yeast strain doesn't produce...

    what yeast do you like?

I use nothing but Wyeast. I've had so much success with it that I haven't felt the need to try anything else. I wash the seasonal strains like 1469 West Yorkshire and 1026 British Cask Ale, and I think i am going to make 1728 Scottish Ale my "house strain". I love the fact that I can use a...

    Hello from a new guy

Try Northern Brewer. They have lots of great kits and flat rate shipping. I would even suggest reading http://www.howtobrew.com/intro.html , as that will give you a great walkthrough of your first batch.

    Is Sam Adams going downhill?

Me Three. Sam Adams Winter was one of my favorites that I used to look forward to around October. The Winter Lager used to be a strong wheat bock, which was awesome. Now its like a spiced lager of some kind. I was actually angry there were so many in my holiday brew pack from costco. I...

Glass carboy or plastic bucket for primary?

I have used a bucket once, then immediately bought a 6.5 gallon glass carboy. As stated before, this has been beaten to death, but I use nothing but glass. I'm careful with it, and it even looks more impressive to non-brewing friends and relatives (if that's important to you).

Off flavor in first 3 brews

I think the nail was hit on the head. I would soak all of your bottles in PBW/Oxy Clean, and make sure to use a bottle brush. Rinse thoroughly. I also run my bottles through the dry cycle of the dishwasher to sanitize. Keep a bucket and a spray bottle of star-san handy at all times, and...

I want to make an Imperial IPA - just not hoppy

I'm actually drinking one right now, and there is absolutely NO rauch in this beer. In fact, smoked malt isn't even in the same time zone. I have seen a few recipes for Wee Heavy that have some smoked malt, and I also have a lb of peat malt in my fridge right now for an upcoming 80 /-...

    Kreamyx Question

Better read the instructions - it says it is for 23 Litres of beer - aka 6 gallons. I used an entire pack on a Moose Drool clone, and had 10 bottle bombs. If you have a kitchen scale, i would weigh it, the divide by 6, and get rid (or save) 1/6th of it. That should be plenty for a 5 gallon...

I want to make an Imperial IPA - just not hoppy

I just bottled a scotch Wee Heavy I brewed a couple of months ago. There is a total of 1 oz of hops in the entire 5 gallon batch. It's seriously malty, smells like vanilla toffee and caramel, and SWMBO just told me to make sure we always have some. Its around 9%, and is essentially...

    2011 Brewing Goals

    1) Move to all-grain (MLT is complete, now I just need the 15 gallon pot and propane burner) 2) Start making wine 3) Build a keezer 4) Finally figure out which ale to always have on hand - although the testing is fun 5) Perfect my Graff recipe. I started with Brandon O's recipe as a base and...

    Screening your wort before pitching

I usually use a 11" funnel with a filter built-in, and that keeps hop particles and irish moss out of my primary. It's probably not necessary since everything will drop from suspension anyways while fermenting. Also, I would keep leftover hops and specialty grains in the fridge or freezer...

    Stir Plate Fan Question

I built one using a new 120mm fan from a local IT shop, and it had 3 wires - red, black and yellow. The red was hot, black was ground, and the yellow was for RPM control. Not sure what a 4th one would be. What type of connector was at the end? Molex, or a mobo 3 pin fan connector?

Thinking about going all grain and have some questions on coolers

I just used that conversion set from bargainfittings and i'm damn impressed. I used it to convert a 70qt coleman extreme. With batch sparging, this should leave me plenty of room for bigger beers.

Looking for stirplate with plastic box

Use a project box from Radio Shack. I recommend the 8x6, as it gives you more surface area for larger starters. In fact, I just used mine tonight for a starter for my Baltic Porter.

Haier Recalls Chest Freezers for Fire Hazard

This was posted on Consumerist.com today - http://consumerist.com/2010/11/black-decker-and-haier-recall-chest-freezers-because-cold-stuff-isnt-supposed-to-burst-into-flames.html http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml11/11028.html It looks like it only affects (at the moment) Haier...
