BIABasket - My Grain Basket Doubles as a Hop Spider

I chill through a plate chiller directly from the Keggle, so I can't do what you are suggesting unless I recirculate chilled wort back into the Keggle (not a good idea I think we would agree). I could locate the diptube at the side as you suggest, and leave behind more trub. As it stands I am...

BIABasket - My Grain Basket Doubles as a Hop Spider

Here is a little more on my process, prompted by your comments. I did not put the hop basket into the Keggle until after the hot break - not by design just how it happened (I was dumping the basket and cleaning out the grain residue). This brew had late boil additions. (NEIPA). I'm in the...

BIABasket - My Grain Basket Doubles as a Hop Spider

Well yesterday was the first day I attempted to use my grain basket for the dual purpose of hop spider, and it worked. My grain basket is stainless steel with a 12.5" diameter, is 15" tall, and has 800 micron mesh. It just fits into my 15.5 gallon Keggle, and has 1.5" feet to keep the basket...

Souse Vide Cooker to Hold Mash Temperature

Is anyone actually doing this successfully for a 5 gallon mash? What wattage cooker are you using? Are you able to step to other temperatures fairly quickly? Cheers!

How Do Professional Brewers Treat Their Water

Filtering out particulates and removing chlorine would have been an answer, instead he said "nothing". So basically he lied.

This label is for my Mike's Wicked Ale, an attempt at cloning Pete's Wicked Ale. I came pretty close....it is very good.

How Do Professional Brewers Treat Their Water

I went to a local brewing school about 10 years ago, one of those for-the-general-public classes where you make the beer as a group and have a bash when it is ready. Lots of fun, highly recommended. At the end of the course I asked the Master Brewer how they treat their water. I figured if...

    What are you drinking now?

Well - I tried my Mike's Wicked Ale last evening, and it is amazing. I am pretty hard on my brews, so this is unusual. I really like it. The bitterness was just right, prominent but it did not overwhelm the malt and chocolate and roasted notes. The hop aroma and flavor was excellent. As soon...

    Poor hops utilization with hop-spider?

Assuming we are talking about hop pellets......….I'm personally convinced that anything but free-range (hops directly in the wort) results in reduced hop utilization, of varying degrees depending on your setup. I think if you must use a spider then go as large as possible given your budget...

    Poor hops utilization with hop-spider?

The reason my hop container is so large is that it is also my grain basket. My plan is to try and use this same basket for both purposes, and yes the idea was it is like having the hops float freely in the boil, except that some hop trub is contained in the basket. I have not tried this yet...

    Poor hops utilization with hop-spider?

Hi and thanks for your post/reply. I have a large (12" diameter x 15" high) 800 micron mesh basket that I plan to use to contain pellet hops during my boil and hop stand. My system plumbing (the hoses) are 3/8" ID at the smallest points. I will run my pump to recirculate as you do. (I will...
