Pumping chilled wort to your fermenter

Sanity check... what's everyone's thoughts on just letting the cooled wort "free fall" to the bottom of the vessel from the lid? For some reason it feels wrong, but I know I've seen people do this before...

Pumping chilled wort to your fermenter

Yeah -- I was looking at that fitting earlier and I really liked the fact that it's one piece. Definitely the cleanest and most sanitary option. I already had some extra parts laying around, and the wort will be traveling through probably a dozen other threaded joints on the way to the...

Pumping chilled wort to your fermenter

A few batches ago I picked up an Anvil Bucket Fermentor and being the "tinkerer" I am, I decided to solder a 1.5" TC ferrule to the lid This opens up a ton of possibilities for accessories. I also picked up a 1.5" TC gas post fitting that I can use for both blow off purposes as well as...

    Lion Brewing Solutions (on eBay)

Well, I finally got my Tilt yesterday. ...and it leaks. Seriously. Now, to be fair, I don't think this has anything to do with Lion Brewing. It appears there was some kind of a manufacturer issue with the threads. I opted to contact Tilt directly and they are going to send me another unit...

Freak of Science...a NEIPA turned clear...?

I've only brewed a few intentionally hazy beers, but if I don't finish the keg within a month, they completely clear out. This goes for every batch of beer really. I'll admin it takes me about 2-3 months to finish a keg, and regardless of technique or ingredients...every batch finishes...

    First DIY herms brew yesterday

I have my mill set to .035 and I got 88% on my last batch with conditioned grain and no recirculating issues (running the pump at 30% or so). With my equipment, .035 is about as fine as I would go.

    Recirculating system poll

I kept my crush at about .035 and dialed back my pump to about 33% power. I'm mashing in an insulated cooler with a domed false bottom. It flows fine as long as I don't try to pump to fast. Realistically, I probably need to dial it back to 20-25% power, because when I go to sparge (which is...

    Lion Brewing Solutions (on eBay)

Good news -- my Tilt FINALLY shipped. Almost 3 weeks after purchase.

    First DIY herms brew yesterday

I had almost the same exact experience on my first batch with my E-HERMS system. My thread grew to 3-4 pages and was ultimately closed because of differing opinions. Here's what worked for me: Boil off rate is no big deal. I guess 1gph, but my result was 1.4gph. The good news is that on my...

    Temperature probe location

I used to have my MT probe on the ball valve exiting the vessel. I decided to move it to the lid bulkhead where the wort re-enters the MT. This way I know exactly what temp I'm adding to the MT. I don't think there's a right answer, but this just felt better to me (plus I'm mashing in an...

    New Anvil Bucket Fermentors

Yes -- PBW. No -- I'm not using a pond pump here. I'm using my regular wort pump. But the PBW won't eat a pond pump either... I used a pond pump to pump PBW and starsan through kegs. No problem. Same reason why commercial breweries don't fill their 10, 20, 30+ bbl tanks to the top to soak...

    Lion Brewing Solutions (on eBay)

Yeah -- it sounds like a stocking issue. That's a serious bummer. I'm still waiting for my item to actually ship. What sucks even more is that I'm leaving for vacation next Friday and will be gone for 1.5 weeks. I'm sure I'll get it eventually...I just hope it ships this week so I can have...

    Fixing the Anvil Fermentor Lid

Testing out my new 1.5” TC CIP micro sprayer from SS Brewtech. As soon as I turned this thing on, I knew my days of scrubbing this vessel were long gone.

    Fixing the Anvil Fermentor Lid

With the QD on the post and the barb sticking up, it looks like it would need a total minimum height of 25" to fit. It fits into my fermentation freezer no problem.

    Fixing the Anvil Fermentor Lid

Here's a picture of the harvester I built: It just uses 1/2 NPT to 3/8" barb fittings and then on the inside I'm using 1/2" NPT PVC components. Instead of hot glue, you can just use high temp silicone o-rings. This little setup worked like a charm on my last batch. I decided to keep the...

    Fixing the Anvil Fermentor Lid

Correct. I thought the original diameter was 1-1/8" but it was already 1-1/4" which was exactly what the pull-through tool called for. I actually wound up reheating the solder after I took these pics because I had a few pits in the bead and didn't like the looks of it.

    Lion Brewing Solutions (on eBay)

Wow -- just got a response from them. Apparently they sold out (even though the product page said they had it in stock). Apparently they should be getting more tomorrow (2 weeks after I made the purchase). I guess you get what you pay for...

I’m getting the sense that my cold crashes aren’t as effective as they could/should be...

I forgot to mention -- I do have a small piece of styrofoam that I place over the probe so it's a little closer to the actual wort temp. I don't think it makes a huge difference but it's better than nothing. That's what I've noticed with all of my batches. Even with a cold crash, the beer...

I’m getting the sense that my cold crashes aren’t as effective as they could/should be...

I ferment in an Anvil Bucket Fermentor which is inside my temp controller chest freezer. My probe is attached to the outside of my fermentor wall. When I cold crash, I set the temp to 36, and once it reaches that point, I wait 24 hours and then keg. Given the fact that I’m measuring ambient...
