Options to avoid a dry hop - increase whirlpool/flameout hops?

I stumbled across this article on the Yakima Valley Hop site, on mash hopping. Mash Hopping 101 Read the Q&A about "Mash temperatures are not high enough to isomerize any of the alpha acids"

    All in one strike temperature.

Agreed, Since your post boil gravity is 1.055 is a good indication that your mash temp is ok, the slightly higher gravity could be due to boil off evaporation. As @IslandLizard indicated if your mash temp was too high your post boil gravity would be lower than target. You would be killing...

    All in one strike temperature.

How are you measuring your final gravity, refractometer or hydrometer? At what temp are you measuring your final gravity? Are you compensating for temp? All of your temps and numbers look good. If you are using a refactormeter you have to calculate from the original gravity as the...

Making Traditional rice Wine. Cheap, Fun, and Different

Just for reference, One of the famous rice wines from China is Xiaoxing wine, from Xiaoxing China. It can be fermented from just a few days, to make a tasty desert, to many years for a very refined drinking wine. My wife is Chinese and we make Xiaoxing wine, mostly for Chinese desert and for...

    Need Keezer Door Insulation Suggestion

Yup, go to your local big box hardware and pick up some 1" foam, either the white stuff or the pink stuff. Get some Gorilla glue and glue to the door. Gorilla glue works great with the foam. I have done tests for a camper project and it holds really well.

    Wort- boil

Sorry I totally misread your post. Until you can justify the purchase a propane burner or an electric brew kettle, you can always boil in two kettles. Keep the kettles covered while cooling. I picked up a cheap 4 gallon stainless steel kettle at Walmart for $25, I use it for small batch...

    Wort- boil

Depends on what style of beer you are brewing. Some styles of beer are put into the fermenter with no boiling, Some beers are boiled for 90 minutes. Average boiling time is 60 minutes. If you boil longer you get more evaporation, so you have to compensate by adding more water boil volume...

Will a brew bag replace the false bottom in my EHERM system?

I use a brew bag in my kettle for small batches, I place a stainless steel trivet at the bottom of the pot and then place the bag on top. Provides plenty of area to heat the mash and even recirculate if needed.

Dry lager yeast: should I make a starter?

I re-hydrate dried yeast in wort with yeast nutrient. Let the yeast slowly re-hydrate, do not stir until yeast has fully re-hydrated. Then gently stir on a stir plate. I let the yeast grow a bit before pitching...

Fruit Flavoring in Secondary: Fruit Juice or Puree?

My wife cans berry jam and juice. She cans the juice with sugar, all puree is strained and removed. we sterilize in mason jars. The SG of the juice is around 60 degrees Brix. This works great when adding to the secondary. Cheers Joe

I feel stupid every time I make a starter

Yes, Put it in a pot on the stove, add the DME when the water is warm, not hot, Disolve the DME then heat up to a boil. After boiling and cooling a bit transfer to the flask or mason jar. I put mine in mason jars and sterilize in an instant pot. Will store on the shelf pretty much forever...

    Beta-glucane rest with eBIAB

I use a stainless steel trivet in the bottom of my kettle, place the bag on top, no issues. Just increase your temp after the beta-glucane rest. If you have a pump that would make things easier. But I do not always use my pump. Without the pump, just stir as the temp comes up. Thanks Joe
