1st lager - no signs of fermentation after 24 hours

Fear not, I just went through pretty much the same thing. Did a baltic porter at 1.062 and even with a 2L starter, I had no visible activity until about the 48hr mark. And that was even up at 58ºF. It may be difficult to wait, but give it 72hrs, and if there's still no visible activity...

Anyone ever use Fast Pitch canned wort for starters?

I'll stick with DME to make starters because it makes my whole house smell amazing when I'm boiling it :)

    Festbier: Favorite yeast?

That makes a lot of sense since I've heard Festbier described as basically a beefed up Helles.

    Festbier: Favorite yeast?

Those two have probably been the front runners on my radar. How was the lag-time with the 2206? What temp did you ferment at and did you do a starter?

    Festbier: Favorite yeast?

Well the trappist single in my keg is about empty, my baltic porter is fermenting and lagering for about 4 months... I'm gonna need something else to drink. I'd really like to do a festbier, and hope to turn it around pretty quickly. I'm planning on brewing in the next few weeks, hoping it...

    Yeast starter timeline

Thanks for everyone's help on this! Had a successful albeit stressful brew day on Saturday. The sky opened up at one point while lautering the mash so I had to haul butt to get everything under my screened in porch. I pitched the 2L starter at about 55ºF and let it rise to just shy of 60ºF...

Received some seemingly important info from White Labs (and posted a thread about it): https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?p=7015523#post7015523

Info from White Labs regarding Ale/Lager Starter Calculations

While calculating what size starter I need for an upcoming Baltic Porter, I ran into some confusion as to how I should classify the WLP810 "San Fracisco Lager" yeast considering its warmer fermentation temperature range compared to other lager strains. I emailed the folks at White Labs and...

    Yeast starter timeline

Thanks! From doing a little searching around on the topic, it seems like a lot of people use the "Hybrid" category in the starter calculators when using the wlp810 yeast. And yeah, that puts it right at 2L.

    Yeast starter timeline

I'm doing a Baltic Porter with the WLP810 San Francisco Lager yeast, hoping to ferment at about 55ºF. So I guess it's a lager? I've actually just emailed White Labs to get some insight as to what might be the temperature threshold for determining whether to calculate the starter as a lager...

    Yeast starter timeline

Yeah, that's where I was running into the 2-3 vials suggestion from the calculators. If I leave it on Ale, everything is golden. Since I'm using a lager yeast, and select as such, it seems to up the requirements. I know the wlp810 is pretty "warm" as far as lager yeasts go... up to 65ºF. I...

Ahhh I gotcha. I must've missed that. I and my ever shrinking wallet thank you! :)

Also, looking at the calculations from Mr. Malty, it suggests 3 vials for a 2L starter for my 1.080 lager... Can I get by with just one vial or should I really go grab 2 more?

Yeast Recommendation for Baltic Porter (1.080 OG)

Yeah, I plugged in my numbers to the calculator, and it suggested a 2.28L starter, so I was just going to go with that.

Thanks for the suggestions and information! Letting it sit until late Saturday evening or even into Sunday morning isn't beyond the realm of possibility. I just won't have time to actually brew on Sunday. One thing I neglected to mention is that I have some folks coming over late Saturday...

    Yeast starter timeline

I know this has been covered before in the past, but looking for some suggestions as to how to approach my starter. I'm really hoping to brew this Saturday. I ordered a stir plate late last week, expecting it to arrive early-to-middle of this week, but there's been a delay in the shipping...

Yeast Recommendation for Baltic Porter (1.080 OG)

Gotcha, thanks! And since you've used this for Baltics before... how big a starter do you usually use? And any particular temp you prefer to ferment? I was thinking about shooting for 50-52°F.

Yeast Recommendation for Baltic Porter (1.080 OG)

Sorry for a bit of resurrection but I figured this would be easier than starting a new thread. Thanks again for all of the suggestions, I ended up grabbing the WLP810 San Francisco Lager Yeast and I'm going to be building my starter this week for my brewday this coming Saturday. A quick...

Wort chiller for 15 gal. kettle

Ok cool, thanks for the recommendations. Yeah I'm not exactly looking forward to bending 50' of copper tubing, but the savings for building a 50'er over a 25' seem to be much more worth it. I guess I need to go look in person... Lowe's has 1/2" 50ft. copper tubing at $83 :\

Wort chiller for 15 gal. kettle

I have a 15 gal. kettle (but mainly do 5 gal. boils) and I need to get a chiller (or put one together) in the next few days, but it seems like most of the 25 ft. chillers are meant for pots with smaller dimensions. Most seem to top out at 15" tall, while my kettle is 18" tall (AiH's 15 gal...
