Questions About First BJCP Competition This Weekend

I've been homebrewing for about 6 years now, and just entered my first BJCP competition a few weeks ago. The award ceremony is this weekend, and I'm really looking forward to getting some feedback on my beer. But I have a few questions for folks who've done this before... According to the...

    Question for garage/shed brewers

I had a utility sink installed in my garage specifically for brewing. It was pretty costly for me, but I don't regret it one bit. It's made all aspects of my brewing so much easier. Not just for the water supply, but the drainage as well! Most importantly, I'm brewing a LOT more often as a...

    Rye Lager

Gravity was already at 1.012 after a week, so I started the slow rise to 65 for the D-rest. Planning on getting it in the keg by the 14th so I can pour a few tasters at Thanksgiving. Or full servings if everything is tasting clean!

    Rye Lager

Oh for sure, planning on it! I'll do a flat-taster when I transfer to the keg, one when it's all carbed up, then a final one once it's been lagered for 4 weeks or so. I can already tell this one is going to test my patience to just go ahead and put it on tap...

    Rye Lager

Small update... Brew day went off without a hitch this past weekend (Oct 26). Missed a few points on the OG; came out to 1.050 instead of 1.052... But other than that, all gravy. I also dropped the melanoiden. Seemed a little unnecessary, and thought it might take away from the "bite" of...

New post a picture of your pint

My go-to, football-watchin, anytime-drinkin brew for the fall. Festbier!

    Rye Lager

Ha! Great minds on the hops! Digging through my hop draw in the fridge I found a couple ounces of both Saaz and Select Spalt and talked myself into using those instead of the NB and Fuggles the other day. I also like your point about using some pilsner to let it shine through more. I'm such...

    Rye Lager

That's mighty neighborly of you... I'll keep you posted ;)

    Rye Lager

Oh I've got empty kegs! The problem is that my fermentation chamber is currently occupied with a Munich Dunkel that won't be ready to keg for another 2 weeks or so (depending on how it goes, I typically get crazy good attenuation from wlp830)

    Rye Lager

I've heard that flaked rye doesn't quite have the same kick as milled rye malt. But I'm not opposed to adding some to help boost the malt profile! I may end up doing a pound of the rice hulls just to be safe. I mean, I don't really have a reason not to. It's dirt cheap, isn't going to...

    Rye Lager

I'm wanting to do something spicy but clean for Fall/Winter, so I threw together a quick recipe for a rye lager. Rock A Rye'm SRM: 12 IBU: 25 Est. OG: 1.055 Est. FG: 1.012 ABV: 5.7% 7.5# Maris Otter 2.5# Rye malt 0.5# Melanoiden 2oz Carafa III (color) 0.5# Rice hull (filter) 0.5oz...

Had Some 3D-Printed Tap Handles Made

Ooo yeah, that'd be sweet! I think he's just starting to play around with what's possible for the handles, but yeah, it'd be amazing to see some more complex shapes/construction in the future.

Had Some 3D-Printed Tap Handles Made

Linked up with a fellow homebrewer who has started to use his 3d printer for tap handles. Had him print a few with some of my brews on them and man, I couldn't be happier. Tried to keep it to just the beers I brew frequently, but now I'm thinking about ordering one for all of my recipes...

Gallons of Hops? Determining weight of whole leaf hops...

Just popping in to say... GO TIGERS! I wish they had done stuff like that when I was still a student. I'd be surprised if they weren't working on their own strain of hops.

Fall Beers = Best Beers. What's Your Favorite Fall Beer Style?

My man, now THAT is a good idea. I've got a roadtrip with some buddies for a football game in mid November that they want me to brew a batch for... I'm thinking a Munich Dunkel would be a great choice.

Fall Beers = Best Beers. What's Your Favorite Fall Beer Style?

Seirra's O'fest is almost always near the top of the list for commercial ones for me. The last couple years Left Hand Brewing's O'fest has been fantastic. Check it out if you can find it.

Fall Beers = Best Beers. What's Your Favorite Fall Beer Style?

I'm the same way. It's far from the best Oktoberfest beer out there, but it's always tasty.

Fall Beers = Best Beers. What's Your Favorite Fall Beer Style?

Interesting! I'm the exact opposite. I used to be a total hop-head, but now I find myself seeking out malty lagers. I still enjoy hoppy beers from time to time, but it's definitely not my go-to anymore.
