    Rye Lager

Time for another update! After another month of conditioning, the green taste has dissipated. I'm super happy with how this turned out, but next time may up it to 30% rye just to see the difference. The flavor is a great balance of spicy, earthy, and "robust" (probably the best way I can...

    Rye Lager

Update time! The beer has been sitting in the keg with 12psi head-pressure @ 38*F to carbonate for about a week now. Took a few samples yesterday and it's not quite as carbonated as I thought it'd be at this point. We'll see how it looks on Thanksgiving. Mouthfeel is ever-so-slightly...

    Still needs to ferment?

How long has it been going? What was your original gravity reading? That looks like it is still VERY active. Close'er back up!

    Newbie question

That's in quarts. If you're going no-sparge, you need a different calculation: https://byo.com/article/skip-the-sparge/

    Ball lock quick disconnect

It's not an AMCYL keg by chance is it? I have trouble with my ball locks seating properly on that keg. I have to push back down on the collar to get it to seat.

Questions About First BJCP Competition This Weekend

Great idea! I need to get some of my pro-brewer buddies to try some beer... One of them is in the process of opening their new production brewery, maybe I'll have to swing by the site some time soon with a care package.

Questions About First BJCP Competition This Weekend

Thanks! I'm in a bit of disagreement with the 2nd judge on the festbier about the maltiness/bitterness balance... Wondering if he just isn't super familiar with the style. But oh well. Much bigger issues to take care of first :)

    Not sure if stuck...

That's awesome... Makes me want to do business with Imperial! Haha, well I guess that rules out viability playing a role :)

Questions About First BJCP Competition This Weekend

Finally got my score sheets back! Again, really REALLY happy with how the baltic porter turned out. And it's really nice to see the "intended" response from the judges for the ingredients I put in the recipe. I think I've already figured out what could have gone wrong with the...

    Not sure if stuck...

You're not in terrible shape... According to Imperial, Joystick has attenuation of 73 - 77%. You're currently at 64% apparent attenuation. You don't still have the package of yeast do you? I'm just wondering when the production date was, the number of viable cells might have been lower if...

What came in the mail for you today?

    How is this looking?

Yeast gonna do what yeast gonna do... What was your last brew? What was the yeast? What was the temp? You can definitely get a little predictive of strains and what to expect, but if it's a whole different set of circumstances, who knows. Give it a few more days and check gravity.

Questions About First BJCP Competition This Weekend

Update! Didnt place, which I wasnt really expecting to... and yeah, they lumped a ton of styles into larger categories. And sadly, score sheets wont be ready to hand out til Wednesday. My baltic porter got a 40! Super pumped about that. My Festbier got a 22... not really sure what...

Building a collar for an upright freezer. Can I lay it on its back?

Yeah, that I'm aware of. I'm not talking about running it while it's on it's back. I'm wondering if there are inherent problems of placing it on its back for the purposes of constructing and affixing the collar.

Building a collar for an upright freezer. Can I lay it on its back?

I'm looking to expand my brewing and fermenting capacity, and all of the fermentation vessels I've been wanting (14 gal brew bucket, Chronical 14, Spike CF10, etc.) are just a tad too big for my upright fermentation chamber. The height is just fine, and so is the width, but the depth is just...

Brew Bucket owners - What Mini Fridge are you using ?

Sorry if this has been covered, but has anyone looked into a fridge for the 14 gal BrewBucket BME?

Questions About First BJCP Competition This Weekend

That's really good to know. And actually highlights one of my nightmares about doing this... *I* think my beers taste great. All of my friends and anyone I've ever given a beer to thinks they taste great. But I have this underlying fear that I'm diacetyl-blind. Or have no real idea what...

Questions About First BJCP Competition This Weekend

Haha I'm not sure if I've had much of an "experience" yet. My LHBS had a post on social media about some upcoming BJCP events, and I noticed that one of them had the deadline for submission fast approaching. I had some already-kegged brews at the house that I was REALLY happy with, and...
