    hop weight

My rule of thumb is to expect nothing the first year and little the second year. If i remember correctly, a kitchen sized trash bag yields about 6 oz dried hops.

    Old DME

DME generally has a longer shelf life than LME. But that really depends on the "d" part of the equation. I don't know how much it it would degrade if it gets damp and forms a brick. Malt extract doesn't really spoil, per se, so it should stll be usable, but the beer may not be as good as one...

    Legal to trade brew?

As a clarification, you can brew up to 100 gallons per year per adult, but only up to a maximum of 200 gallons total. So if there are 3 adults, the maximum is still 200 gallons. That's a federal limit. Individual states can set a lower limit, but not a higher one. I found something with the...

    Legal to trade brew?

I would forgo enjoying my homebrew. Actually, I'd enjoy 6 of them.

    Legal to trade brew?

Laws vary by state. I live in Utah. I looked into the laws almost a decade ago (when Utah legalized brewing). I can't legally share home brew with anybody except relatives. And I can't take more than a six pack out of my house (for example to a picnic). Do I think it's likely that these laws...

Portable Vacuum Sealer Bags Losing Seal? (Hops)

I bought one of those handheld vacuum sealers a long time ago and came to the conclusion that if I wanted to buy ingredients in bulk, it made sense too buy a decent vacuum sealer. As a bonus, I've used it for many things that aren't beer related, so it was well worth three money spent.

    Sale at 47Hops.com - $4.47 per Pound

I ordered the evening of the 16th. I got an email a couple of hours ago with a FedEx tracking number. FedEx says it's scheduled to ship 6/4 with a delivery date of 6/6.

    Aw crap...read LME as DME

If you let it ride, it'll be a bit stronger than expected and will probably taste a little sweeter than designed. If you add water, it'll be closer to the way it was designed (not quite exact because you're not increasing the hops) and you'll get more beer. I'd probably let it ride if I were...

BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

I live at an elevation, so I like the fact that this release adjusts for that.

    If you've got a mash&boil, there's a Brewer's Edge Mash and Boil group that's pretty good.

Dropped some of the yeast packaging in the Carboy!

I once dropped my phone in the fermenter and plunged my arm in up to the elbow to catch it before it sank all the way to the bottom. Alcohol may have been involved. I was more worried about the phone (it survived). I didn't even think about the beer until the next day. It was fine. I'm not...

    Worst temp vs room temp

That's the wort temperature, but don't count on the difference being 10 degrees. Get a stick on thermometer and use that for the temperature.

Anybody else despise IPAs and other bitter beers?

I used to dislike them, but like them now. I have a good friend who thought he hated craft beer until he discovered that he only hated ipas. I agree with you. Drink what you like.

    No carb after 41 days

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably just blend these with another beer.

    non-citrussy IPA's

I'll keep an eye out for it. I've usually got some of the Uinta Detour you mentioned in your other post on hand, as well.

Making cheese from kefir itself - a question.

Are you trying to make cheese from the grains or the kefir? If you're doing it from the kefir, you'd want to strain it using cheesecloth, probably layered. You would probably end up with a very soft cheese, like a labneh. I've made labneh, but I can't remember if I made it from kefir or...

    Nottingham Yeast

I use Nottingham a lot. I tend to porch the yeast, put the lid on, and sick the fermenter in the basement until I'm ready to keg. I ignore it in between. So I guess I can't answer your specific questions. But Nottingham hasn't let me down.

    non-citrussy IPA's

I'm curious. What's the IPL? Which brewery? I assume it's only available in the liquor stores. I don't remember seeing an IPL in my recent visits, but i also haven't really looked.

    Extract Brewing Low OG

Sounds like you know what to do for your next batch. On the bright side, your current beers will be just fine. The downside is that since you don't have an accurate OG reading, you won't be able to calculate your ABV. I don't think that's a huge deal, really.

    Oh boy is it infected?

The Mr beer kits are prehopped.
