My yeast starter seems to suck...help!

For future reference, starters are usually only recommended for liquid yeasts. In fact, if I remember correctly, Danstar specifically recommends against making a starter.

    Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil

A quick soak with oxiclean should clean the bottom. I use 1600 to come to temperature, then go to 1000 for the duration of the mash, then back to 1600 for the boil.

Clearance Hops!! Need suggestions for use.

A lot depends on how they were stored. I've used hps that were that old and had good luck, but if they weren't stored properly, they could be cheesy (literally; if you ever have hops that have gone bad you'll know what I mean). I recently bought some hops from Yakima Valley and they were stored...

Would anyone buy the Robobrew over the Brewer's Edge Mash & Boil?

I've got the Mash and Boil (M&B) and have never used the RoboBrew3 (RB3), so I may be a bit biased, but I'll try to answer as objectively as I can. The RB3 includes a recirculating pump, which can improve efficiency. It also includes a chiller, so if you don't have one, that's a plus. It has 2...

What does this recipe make? (Grandpa's mystery brew)

You'd be wrong. Please read the long post I made early on in this thread. This recipe is very similar to other prohibition beer recipes. Thus is a recipe for beer. Bad beer, but beer, nonetheless.

    Stupid Joke Thread!

Ew. Isn't that illegal in most states?

    Gluten Free With Grains?

I don't have any experience with this kit or with trying to brew for somebody who is gluten intolerant, but the name of this kit says it's low gluten, not gluten free. Depending on how gluten intolerant your friend is, that may make a big difference. I know somebody with celiac disease, and...

    Frost advisory tonight

If the freeze gets them, it's not a big deal. The top growth may die, but the roots will be fine and new growth will come up once it warms up again.

I think I need a new drill for my mill

Thanks, everybody. I think the 63112 drill is what I'm looking for.

Am I asking for an infection? No boil starters.

5 out of 6 Russian roulette players say it's safe.

    Oktoberfest Fermentation Temp confusion

The instructions on the link day that if you're brewing as an ale, your temperatures should be 65-? (Sorry but I screwed up my pdf viewing). Follow those instructions. 50 is for a true lager.

    Oktoberfest Fermentation Temp confusion

Can you provide a link to the kit? The instructions seem to be for a lager yeast, but the yeast is an ale/kolsch yeast. When I looked up that yeast, the description said it does not do well below 62F.

Is there a connector to hookup a chiller directly to a kitchen faucet 15/16"? - Not garden adapter

As an aside, I use a pump that I salvaged when I switched from a swamp cooler to central air. It's a semi submersible pump.

Is there a connector to hookup a chiller directly to a kitchen faucet 15/16"? - Not garden adapter

As I think about it, the pump doesn't need to be submersible. You could put the hose in the water, connect to the pump. The outlet goes to the chiller. The outlet from the chiller goes to the sink. So really, almost any pump should work.

I think I need a new drill for my mill

I think I may need to use a different drill for my Cereal Killer. I've got a cheap Skil that is probably at least 20 years old. I sometimes end up dumping grain out because it jams. I've seen people recommending 1/2 inch drills from harbor freight. They've got a heavy duty variable speed...

Is there a connector to hookup a chiller directly to a kitchen faucet 15/16"? - Not garden adapter

Another option is to get a submersible pump, fill the sink with ice water and recirculate that water through the chiller, adding more ice as needed. I know it's not really what you asked, but it's another approach to chilling indoors.

    Questions from a newbie

I've never grown hops in pots, so you may be facing challenges I don't know. But you really only want 2-3 bines (technically, hops are bines, not vines) per plant.

    Measuring grain w/o scale . . .

Except that what you posted isn't the tiniest bit accurate. 128 fluid ounces of water isn't the same as 128 ounces in weight. A gallon of water weighs 8.34 lbs, not 8 lbs.

How to increase abv in beer

If all you want to do is increase the ABV, you can dump in a bunch of white sugar. It won't taste very good, but it'll have a high ABV.
