    Mr. Malty pitch rate question

Well, my Tuesday brew day was delayed. The plan now is to brew on Fri the 1st (ease the hangover by drinking homebrew, ha ha). I'm sure my starter will be done with it's major activity by then, so I plan to cold crash tomorrow night, then decant and pitch on Fri afternoon. I plan a double...

    Mr. Malty pitch rate question

Thanks for the reply Matt. The way I see it, the calculator only has 2 options: 1. Yeast harvested, refrigerated for a month, warmed to room temperature, and pitched. 2. Yeast harvested 2 days ago, then pitched. There doesn't seem to be any way to account for building NEW yeast cells...

    Mr. Malty pitch rate question

Hi all, I'm planning for brew day tomorrow, and I'm going to use some WLP001 I harvested/washed about a month ago and have kept in the fridge (my first attempt at harvesting). On Sunday, I took it out of the fridge, let it rise to room temp, then added about a qt of fresh aerated wart from...

My first GREAT batch!! Open to critiques...

Thanks for the replies all. AZ IPA, I can certianly use improvement in all three of the areas you mentioned. Lowlife, you're absolutely correct. H2P, you are also correct! I wasn't so much concerned that my beer be an "exact" replica of Ruination (in fact, I haven't even tried the two side...

My first GREAT batch!! Open to critiques...

So I'm a pretty new brewer with only 6-7 brew days under my belt. My goal from the beginning (as I'm sure is common) was to brew beer that would be just as good as what I can get at the pub. While my first beers were decent and certainly drinkable, they typically weren't the ones I'd reach for...

I'm impatient. Will I end up with some nasty brew?

Hey gents. I won a "Deadguy clone kit" at a local brewpub awhile back. It has everything but yeast. I need some Pacman, but, as I'd like to brew this weekend, I won't have time to get any. I do, however, have some WLP001 I washed from a Ruination clone last weekend. You can see where...

    5 gal Corney keg differences

Thanks gents. Ddub, are you happy with yours? Would you buy one again, or drop the extra couple bucks to get the "normal kind"? Having complete interchangability between kegs is probably worth a little, but probably not much (as long as the disconnects are the same).

    5 gal Corney keg differences

I see Kegconnection.com has a sale going on this weekend on a "racetrack" style keg for 18 bucks here: http://stores.kegconnection.com/Detail.bok?no=421 This appears to be different than the other Corney's listed on their website for 30 bucks here...

Dry hopping - do you "stir" the hops?

I've got 2 oz of whole hops floating in my secondary right now. Should I stir (ok, not stir, but maybe "dunk") them every couple of days or so? Or is the risk/reward of contamination not worth it? Seems like almost half of them, even though they're wet, are just sitting on top of the floating...

Well....I am officially a hop farmer

Holy crap, talk about jumping in with both feet! I'm happy just to get 5 plants going for my second season...

    Yeast washing question

OK, I just swirled it up and poured it again after a 20 minute wait. I still only saw 2 real layers - an amber liquid that was clear on the top (only a few tablespoons now of course, since it hadn't had time to settle) and what appears to be the yeast in suspension. No gunk! I "double...

    Yeast washing question

So Vespa2t, would you suggest I swirl it up again, kind of let it "half settle" (maybe an hour?), then decant the cloudy water off of whatever settles? Sounds like that's my best bet. Thanks.

    Yeast washing question

OK gents, I've read the entire Yeast Washing Illustrated thread (why is it not a sticky anymore?), and believe it or not, after 555 posts, I STILL have a question! This is my first attempt at yeast harvesting BTW. Saturday I racked my beer, swirled up the cake, moved it into a sanitized...

    Marking your carboy

slightly OT maybe, and apologies in advance if so, but since we're discussing marking..... How do you guys mark your stainless boil kettle? I just have a plastic (HDPE) dowel with marks on it I use.

    Best methods for cleaning bottles?

Seems like there are a lot of posts with what seems to be a "double sanitize". i.e. "first I run them through the dishwasher to sanitize, then I dunk them in a sanitizing soloution". I've never bottled before, but I'd like to give it a try soon (I've spent 4 hours over the last 2 days cleaning...

Any rule of thumb for time between keg cleaning?

You let go of a GF that cleaned your house?

Starter or pitch from the packet?

So when we talk about a "1 liter starter", is that 1 liter of yeast "sludge", or 1 liter total (including the sludge and the beer). If it's the former, a 1 liter starter would have to be made in a much bigger container, no?

    Picnic taps

How about find a garage sale fridge to put in the basement/garage as a kegorator? That's what I did after I got married and my kitchen fridge went from 1 shelf food and the rest beer to the other way around. 20 bucks.

    Sanitizing Grolsh style rubber gaskets

Hey Guys, I'm lucky enough to have a number of cases of flip top bottles from travels to Germany over the last few years. I haven't used these for homebrew yet, but plan to in the near future. I was thinking the easiest way to sanitize the bottles would be to run them through the dishwasher...
