    Low Attenuation

Being as this is my first brew since reading this post, I haven’t yet tried leaving the mash alone and not heating it at the 30 minute mark. I wasn’t stirring it during the 2-3 minute heat cycle. I do want to try that. Of course, I ended up on a step mash program for this brew that does just the...

    Low Attenuation

Yeah seems like a lot to do with all the well modified malts we have. But in any case, just trying understand why I might be having beers regularly finish high when I’m also firing the kettle about 30 minutes through the mash to bring it back up to temp. But I’m only heating for two, maybe three...

    Low Attenuation

Someone please step in and correct me here if I’m off, but I have had similar issues. However I recently did a Vienna lager that called for a protein rest at 125, beta at 147 and alpha at 164. So, if I were to mash at 152, and then direct fire the kettle, I could denature both beta and alpha...

    Intertap Growler Solution?

Alright. It does work...just seems like with all the $$ to be made on brewing stuff, somebody would have built one that actually fits by now. That’s what I get for not buying Perlick!

    Intertap Growler Solution?

Can’t say it’s elegant but hey it works! Even better, the piece of tubing I’ve been filling growlers with is the same stuff so I don’t even have to go buy any. I’m just a little concerned about how easily it’s going to slip off the faucet nozzle if I’m not paying real close attention.

    Intertap Growler Solution?

Has anyone come up with a good solution for Intertap faucets to fill a growler? I have the screw in adapters but I’m not a fan of those. I’ve lost several of the little black o-rings, and it’s just a hassle to have the extra pieces, in and out. I’ve only found one style of slip in adapter and...

    Death by Coconut Clone

In my experience, I would start out with less coconut, if anything. The coconut is very pungent while chocolate blends in with the porter flavors a little more. I brew 3 gal batches of this and if: .10% is the starting amount, so .001*5 gal = .005 gal = .64 oz = 19 ml. AND 3/5 = .6; so .6*19...

Aaron and the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad brew-day.

That’s awesome. Do deer like the spent grain?? [emoji16]

    First time keg fermentation goof

I do have a spunding valve but I didn’t have it on at the time. Just straight open via blow off tube. When I realized it had fermented for 2-3 days without any pressure relief, I didn’t want to put my spunding valve on to see the pressure because I was sure I’d get foaming in my valve when the...

    First time keg fermentation goof

I have something new to research... kolonnenspundung. The good news is I didn’t get high enough to kill the fermentation as it is still bubbling away in my blow off jar. The bad news, if you could call it that, is the foaming ejected probably a qt of beer that is now lost and I’m going to have...

    First time keg fermentation goof

Okay. 1155 cu inches will get me close enough just for my curiosity. It seems to have built up pretty good because it took a long time slowly letting out the pressure to equalize. Highly doubt I did but just hoping I didn’t over-pressurize the keg.

    First time keg fermentation goof

I’m curious if anyone knows the approximate cubic inch volume of a 5 gal corny? I did my first keg fermentation and didn’t realize my blow off tube on the gas post wasn’t all the way on, so I’m trying to figure out about what pressure I built up to. Also, say I hit between 30-50 psi, how would...

Aaron and the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad brew-day.

I DID want to get rid of that glass carboy, just not in that fashion. Did NOT want to have to buy a new refractometer though. Funny thing through it all, was the actual brew process itself went very smoothly and I expect a good product, even if I can’t say accurately what my ABV is. Like my...

How do you take Refractometer readings?

I stir very well before I measure. Sometimes I feel almost to my detriment. My readings are frequently varying by 5 points or more and I feel like I have to regularly take 2-3 measurements to feel confident. For detail, I take a conversion sample usually at 45 minutes into the mash by stirring...

How do you take Refractometer readings?

Yeah I take a very small sample and let it sit on the spoon to cool for a bit before I put it on the refrac. My recipe was 7.5 lbs of grain, with an estimated pre-boil gravity of 1.030 and target OG of 1.038.

How do you take Refractometer readings?

I’m curious how you all take Refractometer readings? I have been conservative with my recipes as I’m sort of new to BIAB, planning 75% eff and my last several batches have been right on. Today however, I set my crush a bit finer, and was shooting for a sessionable OG of 1.038. I hit 1.040...

Aaron and the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad brew-day.

First I woke up and started filling my kettle, having just disassembled and cleaned all valves, threaded fittings, etc, then reassembled them yesterday. I began doing a leak check first and ALL my fittings leaked. I didn’t have any newer o-rings to try so I went to scavenge from my Igloo MLT...

    Check my Dry-Hopped Blonde

**UPDATE** Well, I tapped this beer a few days ago and the results are in. It’s a good IPA. Medium body with a nice foamy head. Very drinkable. All the tropical fruit is there on the nose and palate, but so is the bitterness. I’d guess 40-50 IBU worth. Samples from the fermenter were citrus...

Crash cooled early, best path forward?

I don’t taste either of those off flavors but it has always been my practice to let the beer sit at minimum 68F for 3 days just as insurance and good “housekeeping”. Wasn’t sure if there’d be any negative side effects of warming it back up, but I think I’ll do just that! Thanks!

Crash cooled early, best path forward?

So my BrewPi (old Arduino) has some issues in the summer time, and suffice it to say I had to intervene with some “manual corrections”. Unfortunately I lost track of it at one point and woke up this morning to 50F beer. Fermentation is done, but it’s only been 4 days. It’s a hoppy (flavor...
