    What the heck?!

It had kind of a faint rotten egg smell as fermentation was beginning which was replaced shortly by the aroma of hops. I haven't checked on it basically since the rotten egg smell went away. Now all I can smell is my adrenaline and tears. :( Should I just keg it and see what happens?

    What the heck?!

I hate to be this guy, but I need some help... I brewed a Sierra Nevada clone (extract - from Midwest) on 11/03, pitched wyeast 1056 from a 1.6 L starter at 70° and fermented it in my basement at 65° until today. I cleaned and sanitized my keg and got ready to rack / opened the bucket and...

Iowa Brand new burner with stand and mash tun

I bought a CO2 tank from this guy for my dad, and he is legitimately one of the nicest guys I've met. I tried to buy a mash tun from him, but he was cautious with my money and offered to make me a BIAB bag to fit my kettle, then put together an all-grain kit for me, and lastly, invited me to...

    Whirfloc and other clarifiers

I've had good success with Whirlfloc compared to rehydrated Irish moss or nothing at all. The dosing (1 tablet per batch) is convenient and I feel like my gunk settles out faster.

    Fermentation Container Question

Totally agree. I'm not rough with my things, but after filling 4 of these gallon containers with filtered water for only the second time, one of them had a leak at the seam. I wouldn't trust them for beer/cider.

How long is too long on the yeast cake?

I'm currently drinking an Irish Stout that sat in primary for 5 months because, well, I forgot about it and I also have a toddler and pregnant wife. I kegged it two weeks ago and it's the best of this style I've ever made. However, too much time and money goes into a brew day, so I'm going to...

    Full volume boil question

Hello all, It was brew day today...Sierra Pale Ale from Midwest, specifically. I have a question regarding my boil volume. My brew pot isn't a fancy engineered one, but rather an 11 gallon stainless steel pot with lid that I picked up at TJ Maxx one time. It's wide! So, I started with 6...

    New Baby Brew

Hello, My wife and I are having our first baby (its a boy!) on/about November 18th. As I have a reputation for brewing beer, I thought I would get one brewed to celebrate. My friends are divided into two camps: "darker and hoppier the better" and "bmc ultra, please." So, to try to appease...

    Full wort boil question

Thanks for the advice and for not yelling at me for not reading the FAQ... T-storms and a break in the heat wave make me optimistic that Sunday will be brew day... Neil

    Full wort boil question

Late it is...thanks for the advice. Now, if it would only cool off a little (109 heat index in Iowa City yesterday) so I could brew the 3 kits I have waiting for me, I'd be pleased! Neil

    Full wort boil question

Hello...its been a long time. A quick question, then I'll go back to quietly lurking: I recently purchased a 12 gallon s/s stock pot and a propane burner so I can brew out in the garage as god intended. I'm an extract brewer, and had always boiled 2 or 2.5 gallons before, and done a late...

    Recommendation for next Coopers kit

I just finished the last of the Cooper's Irish Stout a few days ago that I brewed on February 2nd. It was the last Cooper's kit I made before switching to extract kits from Midwest. After 8 months...it was absolutely great! Smooth, mellow, and none of the "thin" feeling that I noted (yeah...

    Bad experience with Williams Brewing

Its just straight up FIFO inventory management...First In, First Out. Meaning: use (sell) the oldest product first. You really expect them to try to calculate how frequently you brew and pick yeast based on that? +1 for what everyone else said... I was at a LHBS that had yeast that was...
