To Aliexpress or not to Aliexpress

I bought 12 triclamps and 3 SS 1.5 TC butterfly from ali and they came fast, and without issue. they are not show room pretty, but i do not really care that there is a small dimple on the outside of the housing on the butterflies. the butterfly paddle was polished and sealed great. I paid...

    1 pack of S-189, enough?

this exactly.. i am not so sure you can make a starter with a dry packet and end up with a cell count less than the packet you started with. yeast eat the sugar in the starter and multiply.

    Homemade Keezer Foaming

i use to have a lot of foam issues with my kegerator and only commercial beer. i use to have to serve with the gas really low. FWIW my kegerator came with garbage D couplers that were another issue in its own.... now with my own kegs, about 8-10 psi

    Homemade Keezer Foaming

you may be serving with too much gas. but i would start with a true calculator https://www.kegerators.com/beer-line-calculator/

Saving yeast at the starter stage (?)

you can save a lot of money yeast ranching from starters. My WLP001 has gone through countless starters and harvests. I have lost count of the generations i have gotten from 8.99 pitch half the starter, then re-add water and DME and let the starter rip. crash and decant. i store in mason...

the BJCP so called certification drives me crazy

certified was 17 and sensory was 21 Really - oh well! I have better luck at the fairs at those actually give you ribbons! i just chalked it up to two judges that this really wasnt their cup of tea(beer).

the BJCP so called certification drives me crazy

Lol. Didnt check at first but the first beer was by a sensory trained and by a certified. My other was by a certified and "pro-brewer". I mean I have had tons of flawed terrible pro beers too... go figure.... To be clear, my 38.5 scored beer was scored locally by the sensory trained and...

the BJCP so called certification drives me crazy

This just happened to me at a local club comp - BJCP approved comp. Scored 38.5 took bronze at our state fair for specialty IPA. Same batch, bottled 10 seconds after the fair bottles, scores 19. lol.... The bottom comment from the club read, this is not a flawed beer, but needs more hop...

    first kveik brew questions

I do 3 gallons due to kettle size and I use a normal tea spoon - 1 scoop. when I scoop it out of the jar, its about half full. I would take half your starter and use that for 15g. Then take the rest and build up to a full starter again. Then place in fridge once done, crash and decant. you...

    first kveik brew questions

I under pitch Voss intentionally, always - 1 spoon full from my yeast ranch, no starter. You can run in the 90s+ to get some wild fruit flavors. Go heavy on the nuets as RPh says. Oddly, I use Voss mostly in the low 70s for IPAs and its pretty clean/fast. I also blend Voss with WLP670 for...

    California Orange County Fair

did not place last year. Placed this year at the 2020 CA State Fair. got a better than expected on my IPA. I was bottle conditioning at that time and it was clearly not the best choice for competitions

Closed Transfer issues @ low pressure

bend your dip tube toward the keg wall - i bent mine so it sits about 1" off the bottom of the keg with my SS braided line filter. you lose a little to the trub/waste, but I can transfer clear beer. never had a clogged poppet. Account for loss in my recipe, extra 1/4ish gallon in.

    Pressure Fermenting in a Corny

I do 3 gallons in 5 gallon kegs - more so limited by my kettle and grain bills to 3gal. I do not use fermcap and I pressure ferment between 8 and 15psi. Usually the krausen line is between 1"-1.5" thick. I have a pretty good 4 inches or so of headspace in each keg above the high krausen line...
