The Venting Thread: Let It Out, Folks!

grain weevils....... curse them.... curse them big time. LHBS has a great selection, but i always have to freeze - cali weather just lets them hatch and spread like the plague.

Fermenting in corny, dip tube length?

you can bend your dip tube to the sidewall - no need to actually shorten them - that was i do for mine - pours 1-2 pint with scooby snacks in the bottom and then clear

    Jump in kegerator prices

there are 70 ships here in the port of long beach waiting to be unloaded not to mention the lack of materials and chronic shutdowns in Asia. Not surprised things are creeping up

    Using corny for primary?

Also adventures in home brewing sells loose handled ball lock kegs for $29 plug shipping. Ive bent all of my dip tubes up to the sidewall, pours only 1 or 2 yeasty pints and then clear. Only thing that is a drag is shipping ends up costing 1 keg - i think for just under $100 i get 3 shipped to...

    hefe pressure fermentation "failure"

pressure fermentation suppresses yeast from producing esters desirable in some styles - a cleaner fermentation. try using only 1-2 psi

    90 min brew question-

Sources? Alot if not most sources do cite maillard reaction as occuring with a longer boil. Concentration is an affect of boil off. Most brewers account for boil off rates and will start with a certain amount of liquid prior to boil to achieve a specific amount going into the fermentor.

    versatile multi-purpose yeast strain?

WLP1983 - Charlies Fist Pump AKA Cry Havoc For Ales:When fermented at ale temperatures the yeast produces fruity esters reminiscent of berries and apples. Hop character comes through well with hop accented beers. Diacetyl production will be very low when proper fermentation techniques are...

    Massive leak

i have found that a majority of the gas ball lock QD i have actually leak when not connected to a keg. they can leak from the small o-ring on the screw down cap or from the pin in the center that pushes down the poppit. best practice is to have a shut off valve on the secondary...

Yep, agreed but OP just said a beer! 🤣

Used 5 year old liquid yeast successfully

If scientists can propagate yeast from pottery scraps from BC, yeah I would agree with yeast being hardy - my concern would be if wild yeast were to contaminate wort, old yeast may not be fast/vital enough to out compete. Now when i get low in the jar - i build up a starter, and decant...

    90 min brew question-

other reason for 90 min boil is to enhance the maillard reaction which darkens the wort - i believe 90 min boil will also enhance some caramel favors but this is anecdotal

Used 5 year old liquid yeast successfully

I own the beer fridge so i occupy the untouchable self (: - i think im at 14 jars all neatly lined up yes suppose you can say 1 TBS for a 4g batch - leave headspace in my kegs - serve and ferment in same keg I estimate the bottom of the jar for WLP001and Voss K are turning 4 in January. at...

Used 5 year old liquid yeast successfully

Yep - I store in Jelly Jars as well. Enough jars I get those looks from the wife when she gets beer out of the fridge.... My oldest - WLP001 and Voss K are several years old now. I do not use starters - 1 sanitized spoonful and were off to the races within 24hours. I do make starters to...
