    Wild Yeast or Magic?

I usually clean it really well. Hot water and soap, rinse a few times, then put the cap on (I am using the cylinder from a floating thermometer, not the hydro one). But I usually only rinse the hydrometer itself with hot water, no soap. So maybe it was from a previous sample on the hydrometer...

Can you Brew It recipe for Stone Arrogant Bastard

We brewed 10 gallons using the new recipe on Saturday. The mash went great and we hovered between 148 and 150 for just over an hour. We estimated 27# 2-row and 3# of Special B because we've been getting around 70% for the last few batches. Well we didn't have a refractometer to test the...

    Wild Yeast or Magic?

I was able to skim off the krausen and check the hydrometer reading. 1.018. Is that possible? I know it's a small sample but to already have fermented from 1.080 to 1.018 in less than 48 hours seems quick, especially since the yeast was not pitched. I will certainly taste the sample and if...

    Wild Yeast or Magic?

I wasn't able to detect a strong odor, but if anything, it smells like bread.

    Wild Yeast or Magic?

This morning I woke up to use my new refractometer to test a beer I brewed on Saturday, and this is what I found: I had taken this sample from the boil kettle after chilling but before transferring to the fermenters, which means this sample had absolutely no contact with the yeast used to...

Yeast Starter Equipment for 10 Gallons

Sorry, I meant 5L. Now to find a reasonably priced 5L flask...

Yeast Starter Equipment for 10 Gallons

Gotcha, so if I'm using the same yeast, I could probably get away with one stir plate and one 2L flask? That would certainly be cheaper than 2 stir plates and 2 flasks. I never thought about decanting, then adding water to mix the yeast and split it. That's a great idea, as it probably makes...

Yeast Starter Equipment for 10 Gallons

So Boerderij, if you were pitching yeast for 10 gallons into 2 different fermenters, would you make 1 big starter to split between the 2 batches? Or would you make up 2 different starters since you have 2 stir plates?

Yeast Starter Equipment for 10 Gallons

I've been wanting to make yeast starters for a while now and I'm faced with a dilemma. I currently brew 10 gallon batches, about half of which are higher than 1.050 so I'm wondering would it be better to make two 2L starters (which would require 2 flasks) or would it be better just to make 4-5L...

    Food Grade Barrels & More

This place has tons of possible fermentation vessels for larger batches. The ones of interest are the 15 gallon food grade buckets for $18, 55 gallon food grade barrels for $20 and best of all, a 275 gallon food grate tote for $90. Those are all listed as food grade but they sell other...

    FoodSaver Mini Plus Deal

Sorry for such a long, delayed update. I purchased this unit along with both mason jar attachments (regular and wide mouth). They were offering 25% off the entire order when I purchased, so I got everything for $44. To be honest, I have not used any of the plastic yet, just the mason jars...

Regulators, CO2 manifold & ball valves w/ quick disconnects

I upgraded some of my equipment and was cleaning out my garage so I've come across some extra parts I'd like to unload. Here was the original link when I was selling the extra parts: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/craigslist-score-unknown-part-163118/ $25: 2-way CO2 manifold with 1/4" MFL...

    FoodSaver Mini Plus Deal

For those of you looking for something between the handheld FoodSaver units and the larger, more expensive units, the FoodSaver Mini Plus is a pretty good deal right now. It only takes the 8" plastic rolls or quart-size bags, but it comes with an accessory hose that can be used with the...

    Stainless Camlocks review

I just got an update from Pro Flow Dynamics that the 1/2" camlock parts are back in stock! Get em' while they last. I just placed my order and can't wait to use them. If anyone is interested I have some brass QD's from McMaster that I no longer need. They are true 1/2" NPT x 1/2"...

    Stainless Camlocks review

You are definitely on the other end of the spectrum from me as far as welding and mechanical inclination is concerned. More power to you. I'll have to stick with the simple "threading the tubing over the street elbow" method for now.

    Stainless Camlocks review

Ok, so I've narrowed it down to either these stainless camlocks from proflowdynamics or the brass quick-disconnects from McMaster. For my set-up, I need a total of 7 male (HLT, MLT, BK, 2 for March pump, 2 for plate chiller) and 6 female (for 3 silicone hoses). I would like to use elbows for...

    Stainless Camlocks review

So for those of us not as inclined to grinding down the threads on the street elbows, do you think simply "threading" the silicone tubing over the 1/2" NPT elbow would seal? Obviously clamps would be needed but I imagine that would hold pretty tight. Any thoughts?

Plate Chiller Ball Valve & Thermometer

Which thermometers do you guys use? I'm assuming something similar to what's on a keg, just shorter probes.
