    First recipe ever made.....any critiques?

As mentioned by others, I personally wouldn't hop at 45 minutes as it won't yield the full bittering potential nor provide much aroma. I would do one bittering addition at the beginning of the boil, then aroma hop additions. And for the aroma hop additions, I'm more inclined to do them at...

Breaking all the rules - Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch Beer (malt beverage)

I've decided not to use any peanuts or peanut flour (which many people refer to as PB2 for whatever reason) in the brewing process. Reading about other peoples experiences, I've yet to hear anyone say they got good peanut flavor from either of those, and more common than not it seems there are...

Fresh Hop price curiosity, have you ever bought any and what is a good price?

I've never had the privilege/opportunity to get wet hops. However, I will say, I've had some amazing beers featuring fresh hops. Unless the price you're being quoted is just plain outrageous, I'd go for it. I would personally be willing to pay as much as $25-30 per pound for fresh hops...

Adding on to Strawberries tonight. Any suggestions to avoid infection?

I prefer to place the fruit in a secondary fermenting vessel then rack the beer to it from primary. Generally, I've let the beer finish fermenting, and I intend to let it sit with the fruit for a couple weeks up to a couple months, so I'd rather leave the yeast/sediment behind before starting...

Veteran wine maker, total beer newbie

    >Should I start with extract, do BIAB, or all grain? What is your ultimate goal? If you intend to craft your own recipes and want to be able to control a lot of the variables in the process, you're looking at all grain. As you go from all grain to BIAB to extract, you give up some control of...

Breaking all the rules - Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch Beer (malt beverage)

Not a joke. Sounds like a joke. But it's not. Brewing it sometime this weekend or next week.

Breaking all the rules - Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch Beer (malt beverage)

Not worried about head retention and hence some minor amount of oil. This is intended to be more of a "malt beverage" or "alcopop" than a beer.

Adding on to Strawberries tonight. Any suggestions to avoid infection?

You're fermenting in carboys and presumably using a siphon to move beer between them. When you siphon into the secondary, it's going to have oxygen in it. I wouldn't be concerned with the small amount of oxygen in this scenario.

Breaking all the rules - Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch Beer (malt beverage)

I'm brain storming on a recipe for a Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch flavored beer/malt beverage. Firstly, on the breakfast cereal itself, it's main ingredients (aside from sugar) are corn, peanut butter, oats and rice, in that order. Then there are also some amounts of coconut (in the form...

    Clearing Beer - Why?

It was "ugh" because the question was about why to clear beer and that answer was basically just "its cheap so why not just do it". It didn't address what affects beer clarity, the effects of keeping each of those things in suspension, why you would/wouldn't want to keep some of things in...

PH issues with 1st sour attempt...

The pH isn't going to fluctuate up and down like this. The only thing I can presume is you are slightly mis-calibrating your pH meter each time. You shouldn't really need to calibrate every single time before measuring. So these readings aside, if you aren't getting any real pH drop over...

Adding on to Strawberries tonight. Any suggestions to avoid infection?

I would only suggest two things, neither of which you mentioned. 1. Soak them in liquor, like grain alcohol. 2. Defrost them, mash them up a little, add potassium metabisulfite (your LHBS will have it). Wait for a day before adding to your beer. That kills micro-organisms without cooking or...

Wanted to brew something a bit different...

Ha, 165lb of grain, 12oz dry hop, "the hops didn't come through". I'm presuming this is the same person that posted about the "110 pounds of pilsener".

    Wort Chiller

    >Any things to consider/advice? There are 2 general types of wort chillers. With an immersion chiller, you chill the wort in the boil kettle. With a plate/counter flow chiller, you chill the wort as it flows to your fermenting vessel. Three major advantages to an immersion chiller: 1. You...

White film on top of mint Mint

I age beers to "sour" them. After sitting untouched for a couple months, you will get this kind of white growth on top. In the case of sour beers, it's desirable, an indication the beer is indeed souring. In your wine, it's probably not as desirable...

Doubling Down: SS Brewtech Conical + FTSS + Glycol Power Pack

Also thinking, if you could find a tube like tee with 1.5" TC connections, you could orient the tee such that you could have the dry hopping additions in the chamber above the T and then connect a separate blow off through the end of the T perpendicular to the ground. Then the blow off wouldn't...
