    Midwest Brew Tour

If you happen to be close to Indianapolis for some reason, just south in Greenwood is The Oaken Barrel brew pub. Always a favorite of mine when I'm in town. ~r~

What do I do? - (stuck fermentation)

I was thinking the same thing as far as the high mash temp, what pappers said. If it's extract, some extracts have a lot of unfermentables, hence the high finishing gravity. Rack it to the secondary for awhile and then keg/bottle. It's probably about done as far as fermentation. Unless you...

    Fixing my starter's OG

I have used half a cup of dme to a pint of water and also 1/3 a cup to a pint and both work. It may kick off faster with a lower gravity, a lot depends on the yeast type too. cheers ~r~

    prices dropped on hops.. alot

Best way to decrease your grain price is to buy it by the bag, even if you have to split a bag with a friend. Find a local brewery that will sell it by the bag to homebrewers or a local home brew shop that will cut you a deal. Our local shop, does pallet specials once in awhile that turn out...

    Strange find

I would have been on the phone with the guy, the first week that I found those, just to see what the story was. Interesting none-the-less. ~r~

Smack packs vs. vials, heat stress

I've been having problems getting viable liquid yeast due to the heat in my area. I order from a rather close online brew store, and the shipment usually takes 2 days exactly via ups. I have them pack the vial in 3-4 ice packs. When the box gets here, the ice packs are melted and warm, as...

    Austin Homebrew...Yeah buddy...

I've been using Austin homebrew consistently since Katrina and have been impressed with their packing and customer service. There have been a few times where a vial of yeast has gotten to me unreviveable (if that's a word) and they've either sent me out a new vial or credited my account...

    Yeast From Local Brewery

I think it just all comes down to how personable the brewers are. If they're cool, approachable and like to talk beer with homebrewers, then your chance of being able to get yeast, buy a bag of grain or sack of hops off them are much higher. cheers ~r~

Storing yeast in the bottle for 6 months

Now that made me laugh, but I've had good luck with old vials too. So your storage method should be fine. The only thing I'd worry about is off tastes from possible hop trub left that long. cheers ~r~

Please Help! Wort Discolored Near Bottom Of Carboy!

Yeah I agree, it just sounds like you have some cold break in there as well as some early sediment. It will be fine. cheers ~r~

    Slow Fermentation / Mold?

1.030 is a pretty light beer, and won't show a whole lot of fermentation signs. It looks fine and should be fine to drink, albeit a bit on the light side. Next time, check that you follow the directions closely as far as how much water to add and how long to boil, etc. Cheers and...

the yeast cake, oh my the yeast cake.

I always like pitching onto a yeast cake when doable. And I'll also second that, S05 is quickly becoming one of my favorite yeasts to use. ~r~

What ale yeast should I use

I think S05 is becoming one of my new favorites. But any of the three listed above are good. I've done about 4 batches this year with S05 and liked the way it worked off and fell out. ~r~

    Yeast Wars

The only times where I usually use two strains of yeast is on bigger beers. And then I use a beer yeast in the primary and once it's stopped working, pitch a higher alcohol and/or wine yeast to complete the ferment. In this situation, I've never really had a problem with the second batch of...

    Why nottingham sucks

I'm not going to touch the yeast debate, as I don't routinely use Nottingham, however I will second what a prior poster added... Keg the beer and refrigerate for a month or two and I bet the off flavors go away ... unless there was something else wrong also. cheers ~r~

can I use munich as a base grain?

Munich makes a good beer ... that is all. ~r~

    bud light wheat?

A lot of comparisons in this thread to full bodied beers. If you're going to compare a light beer, compare it with a light beer, not a regular. If you drink it and don't like it, hey that's cool. Everyone has their own tastes ... and yes, there are a lot of beerheads that like to say they'd...

Is there anybody out there who's got "that" conical?

I'll preface this by saying that I know this is an extra step that possibly could lead to contamination ... but, It's always possible to put your wort into a sanitized vessel, such as a bucket -- and put a lid on it, and then transport it to the other area where the fermenter is, and then...

    Forgot to Sanitize my Secondary!!!

I wouldn't worry about it either. If there was some junk in the carboy, you probably would have seen it while washing it out briefly and it would have caught your eye and warranted further attention. It'll probably be fine. ~r~

    stainless braid hose for filter

I used a hacksaw and I think the trick to getting the mesh off of the rubber is to push from one side, rather then pull from the other. Just gradually push it up a few inches, then it'll come off easily. ~r~
