    Yeast Washing Illustrated

Ah, I read that post several times and didn't pick up on that part. I see that now but it still doesn't seem right... I end up pouring large jar + 4 pints into the fermenter. Swirl and fill large jar. I'm supposed to have 4 pints left in fermenter when this is done? Seems like I'd be...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

Surprised no one has asked this yet (got to page 10 or 12 and didn't see it)... You put all off the jars in the fridge full of water, even the pint jars. Then later you fill the pint jars from the larger one.... but the pint jars are already full because you left the water from the boil in...

    Cooling time

I was excited to get my 2.5 gallon batch down to 75 - 80 in 20 minutes the other day. I used an ice bath with 16 lbs of ice and towards the end a few frozen water bottles, in previous batches I guess I didn't have enough ice. Next time I'll probably use more.

    Test Batch

... or maybe make a starter with half then save the other half for another batch with starter. On my batch before last I did 2.5 gallon and meant to use 1/2 vial but accidentally poured 3/4 (direct pitch, no starter). I saved the other 1/4 for the batch I did a few days ago and made a...

Micromanging Brew Process when there are two of you

i'll find out this weekend also. a friend will be in town and hes gonna help me bottle 1 batch and then brew another. i'm pretty sure he has no idea what the process is so it will be a bit of an effort to keep things going smoothy.

    Cell count from yeast starter

This is exactly what I needed, but I'm having a hard time working through the numbers. Help me figure out what I'm doing wrong here... You say 1L starter of 1.040 wort will give 100 - 150 billion cells. So 1L = 1000mL and 1.040 = 10P. From this I get that I should have 10M to 15M cells per...

    Cell count from yeast starter

Thanks guys, more questions though... What type of container is typically used for a starter this size? A 1 gallon glass bottle? How about making 2 starters from a vial. The one I don't use I could put it in the fridge after a few days and then reprime it a couple days ahead of time...

    Cell count from yeast starter

I'm curious about the cell count in a yeast starter compared to the cell count if the yeast were to reproduce after pitched into wort. For example, lets say I create a starter with x amount of yeast and the starter ends up with 4x cell count. Now lets say I pitch x amount of yeast into...

    Oxidation

Just curious, why a gravity reading in secondary? Fermentation should have completed before the transfer.

    2nd brew ideas?

+ 1 to phatuna I still have my first batch, also an IPA, in bottle conditioning and wanted something very different for my second. Figuring it would be ready mid-late august I chose a golden ale since I love Tire Bite on a hot summer day. It's probably a couple weeks late for the hottest...

    Time before bottling

This is the best way to see how a beer progresses as it ages, alot of people do it. You can put the sugar in the bucket first, racking on top of it will be enough to get it mixed well. I forgot to do this with the batch I just bottle so I had to stir. Either will work but stirring has the...

    Fermenting Temp

i was thinking last night of 4 holes on the lip of the bucket 90 degrees apart and running 2 pieces of small nylon string/rope to hold the bucket in place. now i'm thinking about just cutting a couple pieces of that thick foam insulation to make a lid. but that'll have to wait til my next...

    Fermenting Temp

yeah, pretty sure thats my problem, i've got 1/2 the water as you. just worried about my bucket bobbing around if theres way more water than beer. next time i may put in 4 - 5 gallons and put something heavy across the fermenter to keep it still.
