    Watering Rhizomes

Mine are planted in containers and they seem to drain very well. Putting a half gallon of water on the ~4 cu. ft. of soil, i see water start to run out of the bottom a few minutes later. I figured since they drain so well, it will be hard to over water them, so I water them lightly almost...

where are you preordering your rhizomes?

I'm growing mine in some wine barrel halves with Miracle Gro potting soil. I think I have 1 extra day of growth time compared to yours, and like DeathBrewer said, these things grow fast, I am starting to see growth everyday on them. (unlike my Italian basil which has yet to sprout)

where are you preordering your rhizomes?

I too ordered from thymegarden and my cascades were much smaller than the others (Willamette, Mt. Hood, Nugget) but have already sprouted, along with all my others, after less than a week in the dirt. My Willamette and Nugget were huge and are already about 4" tall and forming little leaves.

    Container Hop growing question

I planted each of mine in a wine barrel half, which should be around 30 gallons in size. I drilled 10-15 1/2 inch holes in the bottom for drainage and filled the barrel with miracle grow potting soil (about 3.5-4 cubic feet per barrel). I planted 2 rhizomes of the same variety in each barrel...

So I planted them; now how long?

I think you will be fine. From my understanding, it takes a hard freeze to affect them. If they are in the ground, I think they are safe as long as it doesnt dip below the upper 20s for an extended period of time

Has anyone gotten their rhizomes from thymegarden yet?

I just planted mine last night, I doubt I will see anything for at least a week or so, but I will be checking daily! :fro:

    Two per hill?

I planted two per hill. I figured this would increase my chances of having at least one viable plant. My rhizomes looked very healthy and many of them had already started to sprout, so now I am thinking they all will end up growing. My thinking is that as long as I can keep enough nutrients...

Has anyone gotten their rhizomes from thymegarden yet?

I just got mine, at least I think so, I have been out of town since Thursday, so sometime between then and now. Ordered Cascade, Willamette, Mt. Hood and Nugget. They look just like the pics posted before (wife has the digi cam) like fresh cut roots. Can't wait to get them in the ground!

    Kudos to Thyme garden

Seeing as thymegarden's rhizomes come from organic stock, do you guys keep with the organic routine or use chemical fertilizers?

Has anyone gotten their rhizomes from thymegarden yet?

To the folks that have received them, did their website update with your order status before you got them?

Carbonating a few bottles of mead?

if theres no more viable yeast left, couldn't i just repitch with fresh yeast?

Carbonating a few bottles of mead?

After about 6 months in the carboy, I have 3 gallons of dry mead that should be ready to bottle (pending confirmation from the hydrometer). I want to do 50/50 still/sparkling. I am trying to figure out the best way to do this. I was thinking that I could put an empty 12 oz bottle on my...

Using a root barrier to plant closer?

The wife has slightly modified my plan and I think I have found another layout that might keep the roots further away. Now I gotta figure out my trellis design

Has anyone gotten their rhizomes from thymegarden yet?

I ordered in February but my order still says "In-Progress." So hopefully soon. I guess that gives me enough time to get a trellis up :cross:

Using a root barrier to plant closer?

That's kinda what I was thinking with my setup, a hybrid between container growing and raised flower beds. I was thinking if I built my raised flower beds as 3ftx6ft boxes (about 2ft tall, about 12-18inches below ground, and 6-12 inches above), with 2 hills of the same variety in each box, and...

Using a root barrier to plant closer?

Would it be possible to plant hops of different varieties fairly close to each other (say 3 feet) if I use a root barrier about 24 inches deep to keep them seperate? I don't want to end up with an eventual mess of mystery hops, but my ideal location is somewhat compact.

    DIY Thermoelectric Temperature Control

I really think thermoelectrics can be used for keeping fermentation temps in check. I think they might not be up to the task for lagers, but should work fine for ales. lamarguy, I have been kicking around a similar idea, scrapping the parts from a wine cooler to keep my fermenter cool...

Wine Chiller for Temp Control Fermentation

I have been toying with the idea of using a wine cooler as a fermentations chiller as well. but my thoughts were to build a cabinet out of foam board and use the guts from a wine cooler to keep it cool instead of frozen water bottles or a/c. It shouldnt be too hard as the wine cooler will have...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I have a 3 gallon batch of this going according to Ed Wort's recipe (with tree top juice) but thought about using some of the unfiltered organic apple juice too. after drinking both of the juices the unfiltered seems to taste a lot sweeter. I was thinking about just getting a 1 gallon jug of...
