DIY Fermenting Chamber - 3 7gal Fermonster Carboys

I have a similar situation, though not identical. I tend to brew a batch every week or two, so I usually have 2-3 carboys going at the same time. Your case may be even easier, if you're brewing all 3 batches at once. I bought a chest freezer to use as my fermentation chamber. I use 3 x 7.9...

    Clawhammer, Grainfather, or Robobrew?

I've seen a couple of DIY suggestions that could work, replacing the return pipe with a glass or silicon tube, but honestly it's just not that hard to tip up the sleeve and peek, I hardly even notice any more, now that I have my volumes nailed down a bit better. The Pico Z looks cool, but...

To Filter or Not To Filter

I've had good results in 24 hours, but usually even better after 48.

    Using Two Bottling Buckets

I do something very similar with a Speidel fermenter. As mentioned above, having the spigot at the right height is key to keeping the trub out of the beer. The only other thing I would worry about is the bucket material, since you're leaving the wort/beer inside for weeks instead of minutes...

Beersmith export to Grainfather giving different gravity values

Hi - Grainfather user here. The Grainfather website does use brewhouse efficiency, or at least so they say in all their help text. I can see why people would guess this was the issue (mash vs BH) but I suspect this is not what's going on in your case. I see the same thing in all my recipes as...

Bottling and Future Kegging in an Apartment

You can definitely do both! I started off just kegging with 5 gal batches, but I do a bunch of different recipes and regretted not having a selection of previous brews on hand. I picked up a bottling gun (the Last Straw one from NB) and some swing top bottles initially to bottle directly from...

    Increasing Body on the Grainfather

I've done this many times on the Grainfather as well. I typically use the beersmith calc for strike water temps, and do the following: 1. Setup for brew and set the delayed heating for strike temp (e.g. 157F) 2. Turn heat element off once at temp and ready for mash 3. Mash in - you'll see...

    Low efficiency with Grainfather

I've never done a b-g rest before, but the ranges do seem to overlap quite a bit. I just picked 125F as an easy to remember number in the middle of the range :) The longer mash time may help a little as well, but really the iodine test should show that definitively - it's done when it's done...

    Low efficiency with Grainfather

Hi - Grainfather user here too, and I have a roughly similar base malt recipe for a wheat beer I do, but haven't had the efficiency issues you describe. The mash temp and sparge time seems normal to me, and the iodine test sounds good, so that would most likely mean a) some kind of measurement...

    Clawhammer, Grainfather, or Robobrew?

I've had a Grainfather with the bluetooth controller for about 6 months. I started on it, so I can't really compare with other systems, but I've been pleased with it so far. It certainly makes hitting mash temps a snap, and is easy to use. Seems to be well put together, nothing feels flimsy...

British Brown Ale Nut Brown AG

Thanks, Griffi - you're right I haven't brewed a nut brown before. I actually just did this brew today, and just the amazing smell from the kettle had me rethinking the addition. I may split a little bit of the batch off into a mini-keg just to try the coffee thing for the hell of it, but I've...

British Brown Ale Nut Brown AG

Hi all! Relatively new AG brewer here (~6 months or so), and this thread inspired me to finally sign up and post :) I'm brewing this recipe over the weekend, but thinking of trying something a little off the beaten path and doing a small (~2oz?) whole bean hazelnut coffee addition as a short...
