New Conical - Check my plan

I have a butterfly valve 4" TC and built myself a dry hopper that goes on the top of it. I could probably get a glass cover to put on the top of that and look through the open butterfly valve. In the end though after a couple of batches I'll probably just learn to trust that this are fine in...

Limiting oxidation: effect of purging headspace O2 in a bottle conditioned IPA

I remember that part as well. I think I do a decent job of getting star san out of kegs but it's pretty impossible to get it all. I did experiment my last batch with using fermentation gas to purge the keg. It seemed to work well and I understand the math, but when it came down to it I...

New Conical - Check my plan

No I think I have plenty of headspace. Krausen wasn't even close to the top on the first batch and it was a beer that typically has one of my more aggressive fermentations. It's just by first time using a shiny, new, expensive fermenter while trying to get used to not having a carboy where I...

New Conical - Check my plan

No problem my mind spell checked for you without issue :). Mainly I was wanting to make sure there wasn't some advantage over just teeing in my spunding valve since I'm planning to go that way next time. The one issue I could possible see is tee fittings and small lines (my spunding valve has...

New Conical - Check my plan

Isn't a spunding valve a PRV? The one you posted does look more robust and having the QD and manual release on it would be nice. Next time though I was just planning to tee in my spunding valve on the gas port. Seems like it would be accomplishing the same thing.

New Conical - Check my plan

It’s the TC version with the 1,5” pipe and butterfly valve

New Conical - Check my plan

I didn’t open far but definitely more than 5%. How long does it take to dump that way? I’d assume a while. The yeast/trub didn’t move very fast at even 30% ish open.

New Conical - Check my plan

I essentially did the first part of what you said. I ended up putting a gas TC on one 1.5” port and a liquid TC with FDT on the other. I also ended up skipping the blow off tube and it worked fine. I was still nervous about something plugging and over pressurizing the fermenter so I put a...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Thanks that answers my question. Like you I would be worried about O2 doing it at the end. I just recently added a dry hopper to my equipment though so I could use that. I think more likely once I get the new setup dialed in I would add it to the boil like you mentioned. As long as things...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I'm aware of what it is - question was more around how people are using it. You mentioned it's a FG they are looking for not really a percentage. Trying to get my mind around that. If they are adding it in the boil (I assume that is when) then that have to be calculating a % from the target...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

The malto discussion is interesting to me. Overall I’m happy with my hazies but the one area I would like to improve is Imttpically blow past my FG target. I think it’s mainly I’m still pretty new and have spent all of my focus on the cold side mostly to keep out oxygen and my hot side is...

1.6 Gallon Mini Keg - Tight Gas Post Connection

Duh change the post. I have a bunch of extra posts laying around. Why is the obvious solution always hard to come up with :). I would rather change the posts than find different QDs. My tailgate setup is pretty crude when it comes to a "keezer" but I have a pretty workable solution with a...

1.6 Gallon Mini Keg - Tight Gas Post Connection

I bought a couple of the mini kegs below to use for tailgating this year. Overall they worked great. The only issue was the gas post are really tight and removing the QDs is really hard. It's almost like the gas post are actually liquid posts. The gas posts have grooves like you would expect...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

This might be a little off topic but I'm getting conflicting answers searching around and my question is specific to this style so I'm coming here for the NEIPA expert opinion. I recently upgraded to a conical. I wasn't real happy with my original fermenter and ability to transfer and...

This Can't Be Good: Last Call At Another Notable Brewery

I think this is a lot of it. I am a craft beer nut. I treat my untappd and finding a new beer to try like it's a collection. That said there is way to much meh beer in the world. As I'm getting older and getting into brewing myself I'm starting to retract how much I try things that might not...

    Should I use RO water?

I use RO from Walmart $0.39 a gallon. My home water is cheaper but not a big deal. For me the reason I do RO is consistency. The town I live in has decent water, but they draw from several sources depending on how the river water is testing. You can actually taste differences in the water as...

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

Definitely interested in thoughts here. I'm soon upgrading from 5 gallon to 10 gallon brewing. I'm kind of in a spot where overall I can't brew enough with 5 gallons to keep up, but I probably also don't go through NEIPAs fast enough for 10 gallons to be fresh. My plan had been to do 10 of...

    Purging kegs

Another question popped into my head somewhat related to the OP question. I've seen a lot of information on ppm and getting that to zero, but I haven't seen a lot about the time exposed. That also has to matter right? Specifically thinking about OPs dry hop question my standard has been to 1)...

    Purging kegs

This is a great table. Thanks for posting. I'm curious about the reasoning behind shutting off the gas through. I'm sure it uses more CO2, but would the purge be less effective?

Illinois Suggestions for Craft breweries in Chicago

It's been a while since hit Chicago breweries, but I can't go there and not have a few Anti-Heros. I haven't been but if I went today I would definitely find Hop Butcher For The World.
