    Question for longtime extract brewers

Personally, it's space. Living in an apartment right now with my girlfriend with not enough space. Hopefully in a couple years we'll be ready to buy a house and then I plan to start assembling all the right equipment.

    Homebrew Site....continued

I think the difference is that I am not touching their .rec file format. I am just parsing through the text file that the program generates to update a database with ingredients etc. I would be seriously disappinted if a Sausalito Brewing decided this was an infingement upon their product. I...

    Homebrew Site....continued

Well, I have not been very active around here lately (busy work schedule and all....) Some of you may or may not remember this: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1671 I had begun discussion of creating a recipe tracking system. The premise is to allow users to either upload...

    Fermenting with Wood Barrels

I certainly am going to try with a small one. Maybe I will do a secondary fermentation in it. Then, add a little corn sugar to condition. Do you all think this would be a good idea?

    Fermenting with Wood Barrels

I found a website online that sold barrels, and explained that new barrels should be filled with water for several days to allow the wood to absorb moisture so during fermentation the barrel does not leak. I am kind of curious how this would work for fermentation/aging and contitioning. I...

    Fermenting with Wood Barrels

This is my first post in several months.... sorry for falling off the face of the earth, but I've been busy. Anyway, I am getting back into brewing again and was thinking of new things to try. Has anyone ever used a wooden barrel to ferment or age their beer in? What sort of characteristics...

    Check the Technique

Are you doing an extract only brew? Are you steeping grains too? Looks like your step 1 might need some work. If you are steeping, I suggest dropping that temp. And then you add your extracts and bring to a boil (212) and then at that point go for another 60 minutes with whatever hopping...

Thanks. That's what I thought. Know of any good resources about different sorts of sugars used in brewing?

    Quick question about lactose...

Is it a fermentable? I am pretty sure its not, but I never remember what sugars are and what sugars are not. Thanks for the help.

    what exactly is malt liquor?

I'm with you on this one. Barley Wine is a style, as is malt liquor. It is still beer, and DOES have hops. Now, certain breweries may make it without or use little hops, but bu definition it does not have to be that way. Technically you could classify ANY beer as being malt liquor. As the...

    Pony bottles

Michelob and Rolling Rock both come in Pony bottles. Depending where you live, I would say just go to your local package store and see if they have any returns. This is what I would suggest, but that is because my father owns a packie in CT where they have $.05 deposits on bottles, so...

    Temperature Control

Sounds good thanks. I am brewing an altbier right now, and I knoe my temp is higher than it ought to be. Not that I am trying to stay to any style guidelines, but I want to start experimenting with tweaking different parts of my process to determine their effects. Your method sounds like it...

    Temperature Control

By doing this, wouldn't the ice get the temp too cold? Do you regulate the temp of the water, or stick a thermometer into the beer?
