    Flooring question - house renovation

I have not started nailing anything, that picture is the current state before anything goes back on. Aren't floor and ceiling joists the same thing?? What likely looks odd in the pic is my house is a converted cape to gambrel colonial so the old and new joists are in there, lighter being new.

    Flooring question - house renovation

I bought a house back in April and I am slowly working on renovating it... One thing we are planning is hardwood in our master bedroom, which it turns out we couldn't do because we had particle board. So I ripped up all the particle board, which took forever. Once I got that up it exposed the...

How early is too early to call yeast dead

Update one this, just kegged both fermenters and tasted the uncarbed side by side. No delay batch: normal flavor however has a slight Belgian character - was the fermenter I previously used for a Belgian for my wife. Was cleaned with pbw but light Belgian character. Tastes great, but that...

    San Diego Super Yeast

I use it in my house pale ale and it is great in that. I've also used it for a blonde ale and ipa and was great in both as well. It is my go to yeast, on on the sixth gen of my last vial and still going strong

How early is too early to call yeast dead

Haha great flow chart, I normally never worry about this stuff and always make good beer but this was an off brew day to begin with and I need this ready three weeks from brew day, so every day counts on this one

How early is too early to call yeast dead

Had a krausen when I checked after a bit over 48 hours, then lots of airlock activity the following morning. Never had a yeast take that long to start..but I typically use liquid yeast and a starter. Was just really odd to me that one packet took off like I am used to and the other took...

How early is too early to call yeast dead

I just brewed up 10 gallons on Sunday, split into two fermenters, both pitched around 26 hours ago. Out of laziness both got us05, which I rarely use, usually use 090. One has airlock activity and obvious fermentation when I opened it up. The other no airlock and smells sweet, no co2 or...

    Using Concentrate to sweeten

Never done this but I plan to when I make a cider and would think mixing at room temp would be better, then place in the fridge and enjoy once carbed up. Are you crashing then pulling a couple pints to clear sediment? Otherwise you are just stirring it back up by rolling...

    Belle Saison Tartness

What was it you didn't like about this strain? I only chose it because I didn't feel like making two different starters and picked what I heard was the best dry saison yeast.

    Belle Saison Tartness

I never brew saison because I don't like them but my wife does so I split my pale ale half with belle last Saturday. Just took my first gravity sample today (1.002 from 1.058 in 6 days around 68 ). I got a very faint tartness in the flavor and thought maybe I did something wrong. Did yours...

What vessel do you use to make yeast starters?

I used a huge pyrex bowl once, worked perfectly, no issue throwing the stir bar or anything. Once it was done I transfered to some Mason jars to cold crash and store the extra 100b or so I made.

    15 or 30 for a 11-12 gallon batch

Use the 15 with fermcap and you will be fine. That is what I do, I don't even always use fermcap and can manage it without much of a problem. For the yeast starter just use a calculator. I personally use the brew united calculator and make it a bit larger to harvest some for future use, which...

    I'm Gushing!

My guess is because you bottle hopped. Was that the only gusher out of the six?

Torn between buying a house.. 2 opposite choices

Ignore brewing. When you wake up everyday would you rather the big yard or the convenience of the city? I just moved from downtown Boston to the suburbs for the schools and backyard with woods. I really miss the city and the simplicity of my life there, I walked everywhere and since I worked...

Beersmith Boil-Off Rate 2.3 gal per hour?

I had a similar issues - I brewed a few months apart and got a wildly different boil off. Turns out the intensity of my boil was the issue and have since gone for low intensity that is easy to replicate if I do a 5 or 10 gallon batch and now the last three batches have been spot on volume and...

    Mouthfeel question

The first question is what temperature are you mashing at? Second if you could post an example recipe that would help narrow down recipe vs mash temp

    Vintage Chest Freezer Build

The weight of the thing really worries me. It is a real straight shot into my basement, not sure about where it is coming out of yet. If this thing is really upwards of 450 lbs it may very well stay where it is. My brother is a big guy who can lift quite a bit, I'm not in bad shape or anything...

    Vintage Chest Freezer Build

My main concern is the effort to get it to my house. I do not have a truck and will need my brother to help me move it - luckily he has a truck and a trailer too, its just the fact that I will inconvenience him and I want to make sure it is worth it. I have a feeling this thing will take all...
