    End of the world supply

I try to stay well stocked throughout the year, so I didn't actually have to do anything special for this pandemic. Right now I've got over #500 of base grain, and I keep about 2 dozen varieties of specialty grain in gallon plastic screw top containers that can hold up to about #4. I also have...

Grain miller, how important is it?

I consistently crush more than that, even for 5 gallon batches (my 5 gallon barleywine uses almost #45!). Also, in my mind, it isn't about the laziness factor, it is about getting a consistent and predictable crush. Different speeds at the same gap setting will produce a different grist, so an...

    Intertap beer faucets

If you are going to print in plastic, I don't think it is worth it, as the plastic would break or stretch too easily. You could send it to one of the websites that does metal 3d printing, but I don't know how expensive that would be, or how strong that method would be either. If you made the...

Grain miller, how important is it?

Here is my grain mill setup. This is a picture of it hinged up on the wall so you can see the underside with the motor, spider couplings, and the mill itself: I just let it down, so you can see how it is when I am crushing grain with it: I have it on a wall switch, so I just switch it on...

Grain miller, how important is it?

if you don't want to do a half measure, definitely go ahead and motorize it now. There are a number of different options. I went with a surplus gear motor and use spider couplings - pulleys and large sprockets scare me, so I really like the compact nature of what I have. I even have it wall...

    Jockey box for vacation?

When cleaning, I first rinse with water and then I use my oilless air compressor to blow out all the water until no drips or water vapor felt coming from the faucet. I built adapters to be able to do this easily - so I just hook up the jockey box directly to ground water pressure, and then I...

    Jockey box for vacation?

ha! I'll be holding on to mine for now, unfortunately. I built mine from used cold plates, so significantly cheaper than buying new, and I wouldn't want to source the parts again - I found some of the cold plates for really good deals, especially considering their prices new, and already had a...

    Leaking between faucet and shank.

I think it is just the gasket. It could be too compressed and unable to make a full seal. I would start by getting another faucet gasket and seeing how that does for you. It is also possible that the gasket is cut or torn somewhere, or there is a slight imperfection on the mating surfaces. The...

    Jockey box for vacation?

Do you already have the jockey box? If not, one may cost more than you want for the once per year use. I personally have three jockey boxes (2 tap, 5 tap, and 6 tap), and think they are great overall for taking kegs around when needed. I don't use them that often any more, but I do like having...

    Intertap beer faucets

I don't know if the geometry is the same, and the little bottom protrusion is smaller on the intertap. The only way to know though, is to give one a try. If anything, you might be able to modify it for your needs. One thought to consider though, is to introduce your son to beer, and show him...

    Duotight vs John Guest

Great point! I'll just stick with the acetal versions. It is also a lot cheaper this way! I still have some gas fittings I want to change over to the lead free brass though.

    Regulator check valve replacement

Yup, you are correct. For any NPT metal-metal joint, you should be using tape (or dope for bigger plumbing fixtures, don't use dope on brewing fittings, it isn't worth the hassle).

How do you travel with your homebrew?

I'm not sure if those threads on the screw on lid are designed for pressure. I would personally be a bit apprehensive about using those for beer since they were more designed for non-carbonated beverages. The first link to a purpose made growler looks fine though.

    Regulator check valve replacement

These are the check valves I use: https://foxxequipment.com/product/adapter-14-mpt-x-14-mfl-w-ball-check-pr-8261 They are 1/4" MPT x 1/4" MFL. A member in our club works for airgas and has a foxx account. He was able to get them for me for right around $2 a piece, so I bought 30. haha. Most...

    Something is plugged

If you won't be moving the keg, and you aren't using flow control faucet, one option is to remove the poppet on the beer out post and the beerline disconnect. Disclaimer: If you do this, and forget, and then remove the liquid disconnect with no poppets, you will have a beer fountain from the...

    Duotight vs John Guest

I've only used John Guest fittings, both the acetal and PP, and most recently also their lead free brass versions. I've become a big fan of the lead free brass for the ones that they offer that work for me, specfically the 1/4" FFl to 3/8" tube for quick disconnects on the gas side. I'm not...

How do you travel with your homebrew?

It all depends on the purpose and how much beer I am bringing. If I am just going to brew club and bringing a beer for them to sample for feedback and to share, I just use a stainless double walled growlers. I have multiple 32oz and 64 oz versions, along with other single walled growlers too...

    Electric vs. propane

another vote for electric if you can justify the startup cost with your comfort level. I am very comfortable with working with electricity, and had already run 6 new 20 amp 110v lines a while before, and still had space for more in the main panel. I ended up running a sub panel to where I...

    Letting your kids help?

My kids are 8 and 4. I have an attitude of encouraging their curiosity and desire to learn, and to do my best not to push them too far. With brewing, if they want to help with grain or the like, I give them something that they are capable of - for my 4 year old, that may just be carrying the...

A Year of CO2 Leaks, Please Help

Yup, that is it exactly. Their pictures show exactly where it would be on the valve stem. That particular gasket is only for taprite regulators with their custom valve stem that has that integrated gasket. All other major manufacturers rely on a separate gasket. I personally prefer the nylon...
