    What are you drinking now?

Sparkling blood orange rooibos tea mead (with Yucatan Honey). Bottled back in June and is pretty tasty. Cheers! :mug:

    Why do people Quit brewing?

My best guess is that their beer isn't good enough to justify the effort and/or expense. No shame in it. Good beer can be bought pretty cheaply.

    Boiling Pot

If you are starting to brew I recommend starting small with 1-2 gallon batches. That's how I started and really have no plans to brew larger amounts. I'm happy with a very manageable 12qt stainless steel pot that I bought off Amazon for $50. Nothing to offer regarding the use of an electric...

Amarillo Hops - crop year quality

No. Hops that are added when you turn off the burner are referred to as aroma hop additions.

Amarillo Hops - crop year quality

I brewed an Amarillo SMaSH and didn't really care for it, especially compared to other hops like Saaz, Cascade, Tettnanger, etc. Ultimately I found its only value is as an aroma hop at flameout, and I guess that is how I would use up any marginal hop.

    Amarillo + Citra + Simcoe = GROSS

Good to know that this trifecta of hops may not be all that great and as always YMMV. In my limited small batch and non-master brewer experience, I've found that Amarillo is at its best at flame out as an aroma hop. It does very well in this regard and poorly otherwise (for me).

    Asking for speculations

Best takeaway from that link: Give it a try, but it will probably taste like poverty. :) Pappy was a homebrewer, pay homage by being a good homebrewer and brew some beer that would truly make him smile.

    Anchor closing?!

Cracked open a can of Anchor Steam tonight, not sure how fresh it was, or maybe I'm not that keen on Northern Brewer hops. I brewed a clone a while back and wasn't blown away either. Just seems to me that an off the shelf Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, or pale ales that I can brew trump this beer. The...

    Asking for speculations

Sounds like a fool's errand. No way to know exactly what Pappy was brewin'. I recommend perfecting a really good American Pale Ale recipe, using as many local ingredients as possible, and then dedicating the brew to him. Pappy's Pale Ale, has a nice ring to it. Has a good backstory too. :)

What I did for/with Mead today

You are welcome. Sparkling tea meads are well received by my non-beer drinking friends and family. Truth be told this is not my recipe, but an awesome recipe from Emma Christensen's book, "Brew Better Beer." The thing about using tea is that you get some tannins for mouth feel that are generally...

    AI (Artificial Intelligence)

AI is like anything else, it's a tool that can be used for good or not so good. Helpful and benign until made not to be. Don't be intimidated by it, get on ChatGPT and start using it, see if it has any value to you. It is no more or less nefarious than the Googlesphere (OK, probably less so). :)

What I did for beer today

I brewed a 1g batch of Amber Ale with a mix of light and amber DME. 30 minute boil, all Cascade hops. I've brewed this a number of times, with great success, but added a new twist: Pitched a 1/2 packet of Omega Lutra Kveik dry yeast at 90*F. The batch started firing bubbles in about 2 hours. It...

    Waterless Mead

I use flavored tea such as Jasmin Green, Rooibos Blood Orange or Berry Hibiscus. Aside from interesting flavors and aroma, this also seems to add some mouth feel due to the tannins in the tea.

    Who's smoking meat this weekend?

Well it's not hardcore smokery, just using a smoke tube in a little Weber Go Anywhere grill. Grassfed tri-tip from Crowd Cow, old school Kingsford coals and Camp Chef competition blend pellets.

Characterizing Crystal Malts - Caramel, Burnt Sugar, Raisins vs Lovibond?

@tracer bullet I like what you are putting down. I'm on a quest to get the most bang for the buck by narrowing down choices and focusing on the end result. Right now I use crystal 20 in my pale ale and 120 for brown ale, but I'm not really sure how to tell what these crystals actually bring to...
