    Noob eHerm mash question

Hello, I am new to all grain and after my first couple batches I am hooked. I am setting up an eHerms system, however, I have a few questions about Mash/Mashout/sparge. First if using herms to maintain temp, should I raise temp to 168 prior to mashout so I dont have to worry about sparge...

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

Did the Starsan affect bead quality at all? If the beads allow sugars in wouldn't it allow Starsan in killing the yeast?

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

The best way to calculate might be to make a 5 gallon starter then make all yeast into beads.

super cheap solenoid valves or junk?

Description says it is good up to 100°c so temps should be good for what I do. In the picture it has a screen that looks like it could plug but description says it will remove for cleaning. I wonder if they will run without it in. I emailed the seller to see if they are food safe. Good catch.

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

I was thinking about cycling the pump every 15 minutes to let yeast work on a small batch. Another option would be to setup a thermosiphon. Corny output pipe would run to the inner pipe of a side arm/tube-in-shell heat exchanger and warmer water would flow through the outer shell. Wort...

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

Stir plate sounds like a fun experiment, but if you are going to add electricity to the mix why not recirculate the wort through a packed column of beads. You could use a whole house water filter with clear housing to hold beads or pack a pipe with beads.

Yeast immobilization: magic beans of fermentation

Great thread! I was excited to see it was 18 pages long and started last week by the time I found it. If there is no sediment would you need to transfer to another keg for serving? Sounds like this method with pressurized fermentation could really shorten the time from grain to glass.

super cheap solenoid valves or junk?

Will these super cheap solenoid valves on ebay work on my build. They dont need to last forever as I plan to replace them one at a time as I can afford it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/300813749341?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Outdoor wood boiler as heat source for Herms

This will be my first system so please let me know if I am missing some thing. Here is what I plan to do. System will be capable of 2 batches at once. 1 keg mlt and maybe existing cooler mlt The plate chiller or cfc would act as HLT with 250° boiler water prior to and during boil. 2 kegs...

Outdoor wood boiler as heat source for Herms

If it is 250 it can boil water/wort coming in to the hx. I would like the boiler to provide all heat needed for the system. No propane, no electricity.

Outdoor wood boiler as heat source for Herms

After All Grain stovetop brewing, I am ready to build my first System. I have 3 Kegs ready to go and I have an outdoor wood boiler. On my secondary loop for my OWB I was thinking about setting it up as a pressurized loop with saftey valve set to 30psi (water boils at 250 at 30psi) and the...

    Computer Virus?

+1 on avoiding staples or Geek Squad. Geek Squad's job is to sell. 1)What OS do you have? There should be a Microsoft Product sticker on the PC somewhere that will tell you. 2)Look for disk that came with PC. If you cant find your original borrow a friends copy. 3) boot to cd and choose...

has anyone used pex instead of silicone

From this data it looks like 212 @ 15psi would work alright. I found another forum that said pex can melt at temps over 255 but as long as it is not under pressure we should be safe.

has anyone used pex instead of silicone

Where did you get the thermoplastic tubing? I think the 200° rating is for when it is under high pressure (85-100psi). On hearth.com forums a user claimed that on an open system (low pressure) it would work at 300+. i have accidentally boiled the water in my outdoor wood boiler lines for...
