    Slow Fermentation

Thanks, I'm just used to beer where my fermentation was complete in a week at the most. I may try bumping the temp up to around 64 to see if it picks up any. I did test it tonight and it was at 1.030, so it is progressing along. Thanks

    Slow Fermentation

2 weeks ago, I started two one gallon batches of cider and they are still showing airlock activity. They are in 1 gallon carboys, and started as a gallon of unfiltered, pasteurized cider with no preservatives. I added 8 ounces of dextrose and then 4.5 grams (1/2 of a packet) of Brewers Best...

    Temperature Control Thoughts

Thanks, I've seen that project and like it, just wondering about using what I have. I also wondered if the swamp cooler style wouldn't stabilize the beer more than the paint can.

    Temperature Control Thoughts

I've done a lot of reading on how to accomplish temperature control for my fermentation, cold crashing, etc. I built my own temp controller with an STC 1000, and have a spare fridge hooked to it and it's working just fine. I'm planning to use it to cold crash a beer this week before bottling...

Raise Your Hand If Your Wife Or Husband Is Responsible For Getting You Into Brewing

Yep, me too. I had been looking into the possibility, talked to a homebrew shop while on vacation and started reading The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. Those people make it look so fun with their glasses of beer raised for every picture! So the wife bought me the starter kit for Christmas, along...

    Delay bottling, problematic?

    Congratulations on the little one!

    Pre-fermintation readings

^+1 I had the exact same problem with my extract brew. After three weeks, the FG was dead on the money. Just be patient, you're making beer!

    Stunned. Just stunned.

Congratulations! Have you started your next brew yet?

Watching and smelling my first AG

I know you experienced Brewers chuckle at us noobs after Christmas, I hope I a few years I will as well. I thought I'd post some of my observations after doing a lot of reading different posts on here over the last several years, a little worrying, and getting through my first AG brew, after one...

Sorry for the duplicate, not sure what went haywire with the app!

    fermentation vessel size

I bought a 5 gallon kettle by mistake to brew my extract kit and quickly realized I wanted to go all grain after my first brew. I've just concentrated since the on getting everything else, including building a 10 gallon mash tun so I wouldn't be undersized. I did an AG this past weekend, with a...

    Fermenting and Bottling Temperatures

Both of my fermenters are in the basement, for good constant cool temps. Temp on the fermenters stay around 60-62*, which is working well for my yeasts. I have an aquarium thermometer in case I need to go up some, but both yeasts I've used have done well at this temp, though the BRY-97 was a bit...

First AG Recipe and Brew - Input Please

All went well today, I got about 69% efficiency out of my mash/lauter, a little better than I projected. By the time I was done though, I had only lost one gallon during the boil, so I wound up with 3 gallons of wort. I did a boil test yesterday with water and lost more. Maybe the wort doesn't...

    What is this?

Hunter, do you rack to secondary or leave in the primary and just leave the trub/break material on the bottom when you rack to the bottling bucket/keg? Since mine is already in the fermenter, I'm just along for the ride this time. It's in the bucket I use for a primary fermenter. I was...

    What is this?

Great, I wasn't too worried as I thought I knew what it was, I just wanted to make sure. It was definitely a cool looking thing going on in the kettle. When it was in the hydrometer tube, I just didn't know which way to taste the wort, all mixed up, or just the clear stuff from the top...

    What is this?

Can someone tell me what I am seeing in this picture? As my wort cooled down to 70, it was like it was separating, and formed a cloud like accumulation of this lighter, fluffy looking stuff ( I know, great technical terms here). When I put my ice bag (sanitized) into the wort and stirred, the...

First runnings into fermenting bucket temporarily?

Thanks, I posted first while I searched. Found some info that said they were safe up to 190 at least. Let's see if this is my only mistake. First runnings are looking and smelling great!

First runnings into fermenting bucket temporarily?

Ok, I just finished my mash, and realized if I am heating sparge water in my brew kettle, I can't drain my mash tun into that same kettle. Duh! Can I drain the mash tun (152 degrees) into the plastic primary bucket?

First AG Recipe and Brew - Input Please

I had actually thought about adding the Orange. I knew I wanted a little hop aroma, so my lhbs talked me into adding the Galaxy as a dry hop. Do I just soak the navel orange zest in some vodka, and add it in the bag with the hops?
