    Stainless CFC Choices

The whirlpool velocity through the Stout CFC with a chugger pump is also modest. I'm actually achieving a much better whirlpool with manual stirring (pump off). I turn off my pump before adding the whirlpool hops and then use my big stainless mash paddle to stir the kettle for 20-30 seconds to...

    Stainless CFC Choices

I'm really happy with the Stout. I switched from 1/2" copper IC and seems like chilling time and water usage is similar (haven't tested with a stopwatch or anything, just noting that getting from hot to pitching temps with my 55-60F ground water takes time with either unit). What I like the...

    Spike mash tun prob

Thanks for confirming you are doing a full clean. I didn't like idea that maybe the design was intended not to do that ... My challange is more getting it apart than getting it together. I also reached out to Spike and got this feedback...haven't tried it yet but maybe this will help too One...

    Cleaning Counterflow Chiller?

I'm following more or less the CIP plan outlined by Spike on their Trio system. See pages 27 and 28 of this document: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0152/1071/files/Spike_Trio_User_Guide.pdf?v=1626303452 While I am boiling I scoop the grain out of the mash tun and then fill with water and...

What is your cutoff time of day to start brewing?

10am is good for me. I usually will be up in the morning fine tuning the recipe over coffee, and maybe walk the dogs. *If nothing goes wrong* on the brew day I will be cleaned up before 5. LOL yesterday I had first brew on my new mash tun and seemed like I was using a lot of water...sure...

Ferm Cap - Love it? Hate it?

its good stuff. so is the five star's foam control which I think is cheaper per application as it is more concentrated. I used it to routinely boil 20-21 gallons in a Spike 20 gallon kettle. I previously also used it to control foam in fermenter. It seems to settle out with the yeast and...

    Spike mash tun prob

I'm having same (at least similar) problem. @Beavis740 Did you get it figured out? Are you disassembling the false bottom after every brew to clean below? I find it pretty hard to assemble but really hard to disassemble. Works really well during pash and lauter, surprisingly great flow...

Pressure Transfer - Equalize Between Two Corny Kegs?

This is pretty much exactly what I do except the FV is a conical. I purge my kegs using CO2 starsan push and they are pressurized a bit higher than the conical. I take the spunding valve off the conical, put it on the gas post and let the purged kegs reach same pressure as the conical. Then I...

    Head scratching

It's more the cost of electricity and natural gas that is through the roof. Something on order of 400% increase over last year.

here's your answer then...move right through brewing into distilling https://blog.nature.org/science/2016/12/21/green-booze-wine-beer-cocktail-energy-sustainable-water/

    Head scratching

This is interesting thread. Nothing wrong with looking for ways to save energy especially considering local energy costs may be vastly different from location to location. OP's comments got me to look up what is going on with energy prices in Europe and pretty sure we would have rioting in the...

The BK boil looks so very familiar. I've been doing this for many many batches. If you are also doing this I recommend FermCap S or Five Star Kettle Defoamer 105. A few drops into the foam as it starts to rise and careful attention to heat and some stirring and I avoided boil over about 90%...

    upright freezer mod.

I had a 3" sight glass that came with my Norcal yeast brink. Never got the yeast brink to work with the quantity of dry hops I was trying to add so I repurposed the sight glass for this. I got a 4" to 3" TC adapter, a 3" butterfly valve, and the 3" top has a PRV and 2 ball lock posts (one...

    Fermentation Chamber Heating Recommendations

I think my receptacle is same as yours. Usually see them mounted to a basement ceiling... The fan is blowing up, to pull air past the bulb and push it out the top of the chimney. This is to prevent air from startifying with colder air pooling in bottom of the freezer and warmer air collecting...

    Fermentation Chamber Heating Recommendations

Wow @MaxStout beat to the reptile lamp in a ceramic base. I took a bit longer to get this picture which shows how I set it up. The ceramic base sits on that plywood square. The metal tube with holes in bottom covers the base/bulb. At the top of the tube is a muffin fan. This one comes with...

    Primary Fermentation

um don't add any water...that will dilute the beer and cause other problems.

    Primary Fermentation

Welcome to HBT and the hobby! This should not impact flavor or quality. It will likely impact quantity. Also you mention primary fermentation. There is no need for a secondary fermentation. If you do a secondary fermentation you want that fermentor to be entirely full. So yes in that case...

Anton Parr Easy Dens. Is it worth it?

Whoa I did not realize this. I was thinking it was digital refractometer like the Milwaukee MA871. That is a super nice feature.

Anton Parr Easy Dens. Is it worth it?

I'm with @micraftbeer ... a standard refractometer is hard to beat. Most brews I don't bother much with cooling the samples, just grab a 1/4 tsp from the kettle/mash tun, put it on the glass and close it quick. let the refractometer sit about a minute before taking the reading to temperature...
