    Fixing Bland Beer

I've never used this but sounds like it might take care of it... https://www.homebrewohio.com/hoptimize/

    Teach me about using pump(s)

You turn down the pump with a ball valve on the "out" side of the pump. Most homebrew pumps are magnetic drive and are not self priming. You always want to restrict flow on the "out" side of these pumps, never on the "in" side. So if pumping from the mash tun to the boil kettle you want the...

    submersible Pump for CIP

I set my heater at 130F. Pump has tolerated it well enough.

    submersible Pump for CIP

I upgraded my sump pump with some 1.5" PVC so I'm pumping through that instead of through about 60" of 1/2" ID silicone tubing. I'm happy with the performance.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

So nobody answered my question regarding hard piping my sump pump to increase flow/pressure. I give it a try and believe it was a success. Seems to be much improved.

    Tri clamps?

Everytime I read this or similar thread I remember to go out and break down a few of my ball valves. Everytime they are perfectly clean on the inside and feel like it was a waste of time. Every brew day all of my valves get hot PBW circulated through them with valve open 45% angle. Then hot...

    New member hello

Welcome @Jrscale Check out recipes for Brut IPA. @bracconiere usually has good advice for making very low carb beer. And some interesting low carb bread recipes.

    Conical fermenters

The problem with that Brewmonk fermentor is it is not going to do a great job on some of the key benefits available from a stainless steel conical fermenter. I looked around and found a pretty well written article on the decision process: Are Conical Fermenters Worth It? The author lists...

    Suggestions for new grill/smoker replacement

I have the Weber Kamado and have been really happy with it. I'm using the Thermoworks Smoke X4 with their Billows and it's worked well. It does get cold here in New York but not Alaska cold. I did a big brisket for New Years and had no issues holding temps maybe used a bit more fuel than...

    Conical fermenters

The Brewmonk looks interesting, at least at that price point. Not going to hold pressure for carbonating or spunding but would probably hold enough pressure to do a closed transfer. My main concern would be the odd collection of sanitary and not sanitary fittings in areas that will be exposed...

    Conical fermenters

I brewed a long time in buckets, carboys and then speidel tanks before getting a conical. Made good beer the entire journey in every type of fermentor. You don't NEED at conical. But if some day you have some cash burning a hole in your pocket and realize you WANT a conical go for it they are...

I'm going to stick with what has worked for me from now on

what is your recipe for Crisp? I have trouble with lagers cause the jam up my pipeline but I've put a commercial keg of that on when I want a lager tap on the keezer.

I'm going to stick with what has worked for me from now on

It has to do with volume I'm willing to dump to get rid of kettle trub. I try to start with enough volume in the fermentor to let me dump cold break, then yeast, then dry hops, and still end the batch with enough to completely fill 3 corny kegs. I know I'm leaving perfectly good wort in the...

    CO2 leak, please help!

@GoodTruble that is awesome diagram. I think we should sticky that thing! and also I agree 2 psi overnight may not even be real. Nice thing I see with EVA barrier on the gas side is very small leaks are almost always audible. Before I switched to EVA however I found this product worked much...

I'm going to stick with what has worked for me from now on

For me every new process involves a learning curve and first try is not always better than what I was doing before. On your comments regarding whirlpooling I don't think you need some sort of an aggressive mechanical mixer. Just a big spoon or your mash paddle should be sufficient to spin the...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

CIP lets you reduce the amount of chemical used in cleaning or sanitizing vs filling the vessel. With a CF15 I'm thinking that would be about 13.5 oz of PBW to do the fill and soak at recommended use rate vs about 2 oz with CIP.

    Temperature Controllers

I'm very jealous of your well water. My tap is almost never below 60 and so over chilling into the fermentor is just not typically a thing for me. Hmm a little research and I see that controller they are using may be even cheaper than an STC-1000 plus it displays target and actual temp...

    Temperature Controllers

Second time this week I've seen this question. Who was the bright designer that didn't realize brewers might want to be able to call for either chilling or heating from their fermentor temperature controller? I know they are familiar with how an STC-1000 works as they are already using that...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

The CIP ball really does not tolerate solids much at all. I get the solids out with a hose and tap water. I'm using a 1/3 hp sump pump and keep my cleaning solution at 125-130F. I just run it longer than I might be able to if the solution was much hotter. The lid comes off every time and...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

It probably works fine that way. For now I've capped off the sample port and if I really want to take a sample I will mount the sample valve on top of the racking arm. Two batches doing this now and I've not bothered with samples...
