Yeast options for larger (half barrel or more) homebrew lager batches

So I collected my yeast cake from previous batch...was a 1.048 Helles, I used 3 pure pitch pouches of WLP 830 on that batch in a 1 gallon SNS starter. I forgot to check the born on date for those pouches but I did see about 48 hour lag and was kinda worried about the beer. Brewed on 3/19 and...

Yeast options for larger (half barrel or more) homebrew lager batches

My plan is to keg and harvest yeast from current batch on Saturday and get a cell count. Then brew on Sunday, and depending on amount of live yeast cells on Saturday either do a SNS or vitality starter or just make an ale with dry yeast if count is nowhere close.

    Spike CF5 lid pressure fail

Hmm it is not the liquid beer changing volume that impacts the headspace pressure. 20 Liters of water at 20 C will still be just about 20 L at 1 C. Actually if I did the math right it would be 19.9661 liters at 1 C but think you can see that change is not really driving a measurable pressure...

Yeast options for larger (half barrel or more) homebrew lager batches

Got a microscope and going to do a cell count on coming batch. know I'm overthinking this but lager has been one of those styles I've never gotten right and I'm planning to keep at it till I get it.

    Spike CF5 lid pressure fail

agreed ...wet with sanitizer. I don't mess with keg lube on the gasket and no issue holding pressure.

Yeast options for larger (half barrel or more) homebrew lager batches

OK this works for you with lagers? I've got a batch going now that I used 3 white labs pure pitches in. I made a 2 gallon shaken-not-stirred starter and the batch was 17 gallons of 1.046. Lag was probably 48 hours before I saw blow off tube activity. I've tried harvesting the yeast before...

Yeast options for larger (half barrel or more) homebrew lager batches

I'm wanting to get into lagers and struggling with how to manage yeast requirements. My standard scale is 17 gallons into fermenter. Focusing for now on worts in the 1.046-1.052 range. Prefer not to warm ferment or pressure ferment at this time. I'd like to use liquid yeast. Calculators...

    Spike CF5 lid pressure fail

What pressure are you trying to hold? Up to 15 PSI should be easy enough. Getting used to the gasket was a bit of a learning curve for many Spike users. One important thing is the orientation. Make sure you are orienting it correctly with the square end sitting in the channel and the rounded...

Thoughts/input for a newbie getting into the hobby

I'll throw in another vote for prioritizing kegging (and also vote Corney not Sankey). Like many other new brewers I also focused on making wort and fermenting early in my brewing hobby days and put off kegging but really that step made the entire hobby so much easier and more practical. As my...

Who is brewing on Long Island?

anybody been able to find oxygen cylinders on Long Island lately? I looked a month ago and remember seeing some availability but then decided not to brew and didn't go get it...today nothing anywhere as far as Ace, Tractor Supply, Home Depot and Lowes websites will tell me at least...

    Disposable oxygen bottles in Maryland

same here and haven't really solved it yet last batch I used an air compressor through a hepa filter through my Spike carbonation stone for 15 minutes. Got a lot of foam in the fermentor but really fast strong start to fermentation. However I used new dry yeast packets and I think these are...

What are your tips for keeping costs down

Hmm .two batches in your beer is probably decent but I expect it is going to get progressively and dramatically better over next few months. There is a learning curve here and irrespective of how much or how little you spend on ingredients and equipment a little bit of experience really makes...

What are your tips for keeping costs down

when my pipeline drys up due to life getting in the way I will go up to the local beer store and buy a quarter keg of something reasonable like lagunitas. Runs about $160. That is half a batch of my standard brew day...so would cost $320 to buy instead of make. My ingredients for most recent...

    Us05 experience

I use it a lot. I'd estimate over 200 batches with US-05 with about 20% new dry packs and 80% harvesting the yeast from a previous batch. It is a relatively neutral and reliable yeast. Relatively high attenuation, flocs well but can still be used to make a hazy. Appreciates careful...
