    Use a starter...

What about dry yeast? Is it necessary to do a starter for those, or are they so densely packed with yeast cells that a starter isn't necessary?

    Dumb question about PM

I just did this the other night, and I think someone above mentioned similar.... I have a 5 gallon cooler. I put 3.5 lbs in a mesh grain bag that I purchased from AHS, got the correct strike temp in my cooler, and placed the bag containing the grains in the hot water. After 45 minutes, I...

Lesson Learned: Don't open if squeamish

Don't be scared..just make sure the bottles are well chilled before opening. I cracked a few of the same batch open last night straight from the fridge with no problems. Like I said before, I should have known better. Probably a good and safe practice not to open any homebrews warm, whether...

Lesson Learned: Don't open if squeamish

DON'T OPEN WARM BEER BOTTLES! Don't tell me, I should know better. I had just under a case of brown ale that was over-carbonated and two sweet. A few of the bottles had burst already, so I decided to cut my losses and dump the rest. I was "carefully" removing the tops from the bottles...

    Boil hops separate from wort?

I recently made a IIPA extract kit from Northern Brewer. For that particular kit, they suggested making a separate "hop tea" and combining with the wort towards the end of the boil. The finishing hops were added straight to the wort in the last 10 minutes and at the end of the boil. I have to...

Help with a NB Double IPA

Appreciate the feedback Greg. I think I'll add the hops this weekend and plan on bottling in a couple of weeks. Keep me posted on your progress, and I'll do the same.

Help with a NB Double IPA

I have a couple of questions about this one. I started an extract batch a few weeks ago. I hit my initial target gravity of 1.09, and racked a couple of weeks later at around 1.02. I've had it in the secondary for about 7 weeks. The gravity is close to the 1.01 region. I want dry hop and...

    Buying water

Here's a dumb question, although maybe not so dumb since I don't have the magazine..... Which end does the water source go in? Is it the 5/8" barb fitting on the left? Once I know that, I can probably figure out the orientation of the filter.

    Batch Sparging Question

Blender: I've seen a couple of posts on your methodology of doing a second addition of water to the mash. Where did you come up with this idea? It's very interesting. When you do your first addition at 180 to 185 degrees at the end of 60 minutes, does it significantly raise the...

Using a bag in the cooler?

So how does this work exactly? Is it exactly the same as the standard process, except using a bag instead of a false bottom or steel braid? Do you still drain through a ball valve, or just pour out of the tun? Do you pull the bag out and let it drip into the tun or brew kettle? Do...

    Buying water

In reference to the filter as shown in BYO.. If you glue the parts together, then you have to start from scratch with the next filter, right? Do you have an estimate of the total cost for the pvc parts? Also, does the filter automatically stop flow when it reaches the end of it's life?

    How much sparge water?

How do you hold to the 1.010? Do you put a hydrometer in the kettle and watch it while you are draining the sparge out of your cooler? I've seen a few references to this..just wanted to figure out how it's done.

How to keep braid from floating?

That sounds good. I'll check the properties on my little bottle of Gorilla Glue.

How to keep braid from floating?

I did come across the thread where the acrylic was afixed to the inside of the cooler and the braid was clamped to it. What type of acrylic do you believe was used? Is it food grade, rated for high temps., and safe for the mash?

How to keep braid from floating?

I've seen some posts on this forum in the past showing how to keep a SS Braid from floating, but can't seem to find them. If anybody can post the links, I would appreciate it. Does a floating braid really have a big effect on efficiency?

Low OG on Dark Wheat All Grain

I just made an all Grain Dunkel Weisen. My target gravity was 1.049, but I ended up about a point lower at 1.039 to 1.04. Here is the recipe and process I used. The ingedients were from a Northern Brewer Kit: 5 lbs Durst Wheat 3.5 lbs Durst Pilsen 1 lb Durst Dark Munich 40 EBC .5 lb...

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

Does the external o-ring on your setup acutally make a seal? I have a Gott cooler, and it was manufactured a little different. There open space in the hole between the inside and the outside of the cooler. I was thinking of filling it with plumbers putty. I question whether an o-ring in my...
