    Little confused on priming

I was just hoping for that nice large head like I was use to in Germany. You don't see that in the US. Would 2.5 - 3 give me a nice head?

    Little confused on priming

From my reading they say they can. They are a lot heavier glass then today. The German weizen bottle contains that now so we know they will.

    Little confused on priming

Thanks for the input. I will lean to my bottling temperture. I am fermenting at 64F and will bottle at 68F-70F so not much difference in sugar. I have been researching the amount of co2 volume for a german wheat. It seems that the issue with the volume at 3.5 or 4 has more to do with the...

    Little confused on priming

Everyone seems to go with 1oz corn suger per gallon and when I look up the sugar rate on a priming calculator, it shows different co2 for different style beers. I want to prime a German dunkelweizen and according to the chart I want between 3.3 – 4.5 volumes of co2. Is the temperture at...

1st batch in the fermentation bucket

I just put the first batch in the fermentation bucket. It is a dunkelweizen. I hit the OG based upon the style of the beer but not what I planned. I had hoped for a OG 1.055 but I got 1.044 I had planned for a 6.5 boil with at least a 1.5 gal lost to boil but it did not turn out that...

    Beginning mini mash - question

I measure my grains and put in Muslim bag. Some powder grain came out, should I just leave out or throw in tun. My thoughts is that it don't matter but thought I would ask.

    Quick question on sanitizing

Thanks everyone. My first starter is made and I am hoping for the best. I soaked everything in b bright and rised well. I hope that was enough.

    Quick question on sanitizing

    Quick question on sanitizing

I need to start my yeast starter tonight and the only cleaner tonight I have is b bright. I am cleaning and soaking my flask with it now. I will need to sanitize my smack pack with it or something else. Is there any thing else I can do to sanitize my equipment tonight or you think that is...

    Verify my starter

Balance sounds good. I have not heard that about the amount of yeast doing that. I've heard fermenting temperture does. You can always learn something coming to HBT! :rockin:

    Yeast Pitching question

The wyeast website states that the " The Wyeast Activator (125 ml) smack-pack is designed to directly inoculate 5 gallons of standard ale wort (O.G. < 1.060, 65-72°F). When brewing high gravity beer (O.G. >1.060) or cold fermented lagers or ales (<65°F)) additional yeast will be required...

    Verify my starter

Thanks NordeastBrewer; I guess I was rounding up my ml to 2000 which might not be the right thing to do. I have a weight scale so I will be able to weigh out the 180 g of DME. Thanks for your help. Now I got to find something to hold 2l in. I bought a 1L flask thinking that was big enough.

    Verify my starter

I am brewing 5 gal batch of Dunkelweizen OG 1.055 and using Wyeast - Weihenstephan Weizen 3068 From the pitching rate calc, I should have 2 yeast packs or create a 1.79L of starter. for the starter I should have 8.5 c water and 1.5 c of DME and 1 Wyeast - Weihenstephan Weizen 3068...

    Few Questions

Thanks everyone. Good to know about the late addition on the LME. I read that it is supposed to help with lighter color, reduced caramelization of the extract, and better hop utilization. So anthing to impove my first batch. Everything makes sense what everyone has said. Another...

    Few Questions

I have a few questions as I prepare for my first brew session. I am going to do a partial mash using a 2 gal coleman jug. I have been reading about the process and have a question after you remove the 1st wort and before your next sparge step. I have read some sources that you should put...

    Equipment Testing

Thanks ChuckO. I work on getting the flame adjusted correctly for maximum efficiency too. I should be doing my first batch Saturday or Sunday, so trying to work out the bugs before hand. Do you think a 30 Qt 7.5 gal is ok to boil 6.5 of wort or will I have a mess?

    Equipment Testing

Well, test number two.. I started my outside burner and got 6.5 gal water to boil in 30 min. Half the time then on my elec stove. Still I could only get the bottom water temp to 212 and the top was 210. That was with the burner on high. Flames were rolling out the sides of the pot but did not...
