    Plant rhizome horizontal or vertical?

It's not necessary to trim back to reduce the number of shoots. We will prune them to retard growth in the spring because we don't want them getting going too early. Once you train the shoots you want to the string, apical dominance takes over and the majority of the growth energy of the plant...

    Plant rhizome horizontal or vertical?

Not to say that you can't plant them horizontally and get shoots, but you will almost certainly get more shoots when planted vertically. As the shoots come out of the rhizome, they tend to grow parallel to the rhizome in one direction. So, if the rhizome is planted horizontally, some of the...

    Plant rhizome horizontal or vertical?

Do not plant rhizomes horizontally. Plant them vertically, with the "eyes" or shoots pointed skyward. Also, planting them in the ground will be the most successful long-term. Hops can put out a massive root system, so constraining that in a pot will hamper growth.

    Hello from Yakima

Weird. Small world, eh? If I didn't have your mom as a teacher, I'm sure I knew her. Pretty small school.

Help Design a Hop Farm Brew House

Planning is going well I think. We are going to take off the roof and siding this coming week and get the building in shape. I think I'm going to go with a single-tier Brutus style build, probably 20 gallon capacity, but haven't yet made the final decision there. As far as the legal issues...

Help Design a Hop Farm Brew House

Looking at the WA Homebrewers Association website just now, it looks like I would be constrained to 20 gallon batches without getting a license. How lame. I figured that if I wasn't selling it that the govt wouldn't care... Whoops. Serves me right for thinking the govt would stay out of...

Help Design a Hop Farm Brew House

Thanks! It's pretty hideous at the moment, so there's a bit of work to do before it's presentable. But it's a good size and location, so why not, right? At the very least I won't have SWMBO on my case about all my equipment strewn about the house any more. That may be worth whatever the...

Help Design a Hop Farm Brew House

OK, so I know it's not much to look at just yet, but this is what we are working with. The first step is new siding and a new roof, but hopefully you get the idea of where we are starting. You can see why it was a tear-down candidate. We managed to get all of the junk out and remove the old...

Thanks. I'd never seen a solution like that, so I definitely appreciate you bringing it up. So much to think about. Makes my head hurt....

Thanks for the advice. As far as licensing goes, does anyone know about this off the top of their head? At this point, there is no intent to sell or distribute anything other than for our own use. But it's something I hadn't thought of, so thanks for bringing it up. The copper and wood...

Thanks! That's interesting, so you'd use that for a bright/conditioning tank? Or for fermentation itself? Cheers!

Help Design a Hop Farm Brew House

This. ^ Really, it's a way to have a little fun in an industry that's not going to be a ton of fun over the next 5-10 years as we absorb the effects of a 30% US acreage increase in response to the shortage of a couple of years ago. If we can differentiate ourselves from someone else...

Help Design a Hop Farm Brew House

Thanks for the advice. I'll look around for the threads about the walk-in. We have electric available, but I'd have to do a little more studying about using it. I understand the concept of using a water heater type element, but I need to figure out how to build one and control the...

Help Design a Hop Farm Brew House

I hadn't thought of that. Assuming that we would build at least a 1/2 barrel system, what types of vessels would make the best bright tank? I'd like to "package" in corneys because they are so easy, and I apologize if this is a stupid question and I'm overlooking an obvious answer, but if you...

A gravity fed system would be nice and simple, but our height constraint will probably prevent that. It's sad to see the old Grant's brewhouse today. Not only is it empty, it's falling apart a little bit. The guys from Yakima Craft are using some of the equipment I think, but I don't know...

Help Design a Hop Farm Brew House

Thanks David. That's a great link. So would you really start with one fermenter? Fermentation always feels like the main constraint since it takes ~2 weeks at a minimum. I was thinking 2 or 3 fermenters to ensure I had plenty of capacity. Am I missing another solution that would free up...
