Cost comparison-Extract vs. All-grain vs. Macrobrew

No Canadians partake in this discussion... because it breaks our hearts to repeatedly read how the "expensive" beers are $8 / 6 pack. Doing the math for north of the border, you definitely (can) save money with homebrew. For us, the really, almost undrinkably cheap beers (lucky lager, or big...

Ever know the answer to a question, but you have to ask it anyway?

I've seen so many other posts like this... I put a batch into the primary before being called to work for 6 weeks... when I got back... the stuff on the top... was like kraussen... but... firm... and punctuated with white fuzzy bits... with a very acrid smell. First batch I've ever dumped...

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

Hi all, not sure if this post is better off here in the recipes section, or elsewhere. I'd like to do this recepie as my first all -grain in the next day or two. My "local" HBS (3 hours away) didn't have cascade hops, so I randomly selected goldings. I know of course that there will be a...

How much do you worry about pH?

I'm brand new to AG and my first batch will be as low tech and simple (read: lazy and easy for my poor mind to comprehend) as possible. I think I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do. From what I understand, your pH during mash should be around 5.2. I don't see a lot of discussion...

Put a blackboard on your keg!

Oh man! You stole my idea before I had it, it seems... I was just telling my SO about this great idea I had for labeling kegs (she thought it was a lot of effort to go to ... but girls don't understand the "nifty" factor)

    Princess Auto Corona Mill

I'm sure I found a thread a while ago where someone had linked to the mill on the PA site, and maybe had a part # too? I seem to be quite incompetent with the search function here... couldn't find it... Thanks to anyone...

    Princess Auto Corona Mill

Anyone have a part # for the princess auto mill? I talked to a helpful lady there who said they get them in only once or twice a year. She could search to see if there are any sitting at other shops or in the warehouse if they had a part number (yes... she asked ME for THEIR part number, on an...

    Difficulty with used regulator setup.

Hmmm... nope... no check valves... Could the connectors to the keg possibly be mucked? They seem so simple that that seems unlikely. The little pin inside all of them is mobile.

    Difficulty with used regulator setup.

Hi folks, maybe someone can help a simpleton figure this out. I got this rather old regulator setup with some used kegs. I have mounted it to use with my fridge/tap system. It looks simple to set up with 4 kegs at two different serving pressures (2 kegs per regulator) When one keg stopped...

    Help: Keeping Keg Lines Cooled

Another thing to think about.... 18" of 3/16 line is about 8ml... that's 0.27 oz, or less than 2% of a pint. To me, in a glass (or better yet a pint!), this makes little-no difference in temperature. My lines seem to be balanced quite well, and if I pour carefully I get only a teeny bit more...

    Just refilled my CO2 tank...

I just got my 20#er filled (for the first time in a couple of years).. I thought it was a bit steep.... $60! plus $18 to test it since the last testing stamp was about 15 years old.

CO2 canisters - beverage vs industrial quality

david... so... there is a difference then, if it is handled differently? Does anyone think it should matter much?

CO2 canisters - beverage vs industrial quality

They have "beer gas" as well, the N2 mix. The beverage grade gas is just CO2, but I guess packaged to food consumption standards? Maybe it's just a sham. Anyone else heard of that?

CO2 canisters - beverage vs industrial quality

My local welding shop has standard industrial CO2 cannisters available, and say that they can special order a "beverage" quality gas as well... is it worth the premium price for the "beverage" quality? I know that CO2 is CO2, but perhaps there is more clenliness or less contamination in the...

    Malt price jump

I can get 25 kg (55lb) bags from the local malthouse for $25. Only one selection though, Canadian 2-row pale malt.

    Canadian Supplier of Hop Rhizomes?

Fingers... I am a bit of a lurker, but that must have been mostly luck. I think my location should show up now. :) Good to see another few Cannucks on here...

    Canadian Supplier of Hop Rhizomes?

cool, thanks guys. we don't have anywhere near 120 frost free days though.... likely closer to 100. I may try to plant some right by the house anyway. The other option would be to have a vine or two in the folks greenhouse....

Fridge for kegs won't fit through the door :((

Thanks for the thoughts guys, It's an interrior door to the storage room. The funny part is, it has always just been an opening in the wall, and I only just installed the door last week... *L* It's a 28", and the fridge is about 29. Even taking the door and doorstop off won't quite let it...

Fridge for kegs won't fit through the door :((

Grrr... bought a fridge for my keg system and it's a half inch too wide to fit into the room it is needed in.... :(( I think I'll have to take off the fridge door AND the doorframe to the room. Just thought I'd come here to complain, sorry. Anyone else ever do this?
