Induction cooktops to go all electric?

I personally am quite interested in going the 220V/3500W route with a controller and recirculation. I've been working on pricing out. I'm a single-vessel BIAB'er, so all-in-all it isn't nearly so complicated for me. However, I'm trying to figure out how to do temp control. I have not...

    A Homebrewer's Mission Statement

My interest in brewing is growing exponentially. I'm ordering books, buying equipment, developing techniques, and spending an excessive amount of time on homebrewtalk.com. I have no other hobby at this stage of my life (minus physical training, but that is part of my job, so it doesn't...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

3 gallon Belgian IIPA tomorrow. My first attempt to brew an IIPA from my own recipe, and I'm trying out a new technique or two, so it should be interesting.

    Fluctuating temp in a Belgian

I recently read in another post to not let a Tripel "go crazy" at first, and to start in the high 60's and later step up into the low 70's. My beer started in the mid 70's, went to the mid 60's, and came back up in the mid 70's over the course of 5 days. Right now it is sitting at 73F and...

    Fluctuating temp in a Belgian

Hello Everyone - I've read several posts on here about the dangers of big temp changes for yeast, but I thought maybe it would be less of a problem with a Belgian style. I recently brewed my biggest beer, a ~8.5% Tripel. I pitched Wyeast's Belgian Strong Ale with a 1.5 qt starter into 3...

    New nanobrewery in Cincinnati

I'll have to do that! I've never been part of a Brewing club, and I have a LOT to learn. I'm moving from North Carolina, which is not such a bad place. I'm stationed here at Ft. Bragg and have been for almost four years. Though I'm very appreciative of my time in the Army, I'm sure that...

Learning to drink high ABV beer the hard way

That actually sounds like a fun technique to play around with in general. Once I get my process for a "normal" beer nailed down, that is...

    New nanobrewery in Cincinnati

Thanks Mtnagel! I don't think I've ever been so excited to move somewhere. :off: We were there about a month ago. Ate at the Incline Public House and drank some great local beer. Chickow! from Triple Digit is something I'm looking forward to trying again. Going to have to make a lot of...

Moving there in three months - can't wait to check this place out!

Learning to drink high ABV beer the hard way

Elkshadow - I still enjoy small beers, but two tripels or quads will make for a good evening. I'm thinking of bottling in 22's and then pouring in small doses throughout the night to encourage true appreciation. Mikepote - I spent a year out of the country where I couldn't drink not long...

Learning to drink high ABV beer the hard way

I remember the first time I had an Imperial stout. It was a Sam Adam's Imperial series, and I hated it. I split the four pack with a couple of friends, and then proceeded to drink myself into oblivion on Guinness and Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat. In those days, I thought I was a real beer snob...

Brewing Beer, Drinking Beer and Managing Beer Gut

Oh wow... I must have clicked on a post from the "Similar Posts" portion! I spent 10 minutes reading four year old posts - AWESOME! I'm going to have to be a little more careful with that. The OP is nearly 40 and hopefully doesn't have a huge beer gut by now. I'm going to fight that good...

Brewing Beer, Drinking Beer and Managing Beer Gut

I read a good chunk of these, though I didn't get all the way through. It appears the OP has a firm grasp on nutrition in the first place and already does plenty of HIIT. If your nutrition is perfect aside from beer... the only answer is the unthinkable... cut your beer intake. You...

    old beer

I'm interested in the responses you get to this. Sounds like a fun experiment. How do they smell? Just don't poison yourself :)

Finally Decent BIAB Efficiency... and then trub.

That's a great idea - I'll lookin to it, as well. Do you have to pour more slowly as you get further along because of accumulated trub?

Finally Decent BIAB Efficiency... and then trub.

I forgot to mention a failed attempt at whirlpooling. However: A) I did it before cooling and let it sit while cooling. B) I moved the kettle after cooling and didn't whirlpool again. Fail. I will try this the *right* way next time! Hops were not in a sock, so I will try that as well.

Finally Decent BIAB Efficiency... and then trub.

To catch you up quickly: I was having a very tough time getting my efficiency up. I started in the mid 50's and dropped into the low 50's in my first BIAB batches. In the past I have used single-milled grain from Midwest and MoreBeer with no mash pH testing and simply wrapped my kettle in a...

    BIAB trub loss

Not to wake an old thread, but I just completed my third BIAB, all between 2-3 gallons. I just wanted to add my experiences the last couple of weeks in case anyone else comes across this via Google. I've been learning a lot of water lessons these weeks. My first two batches were a lot smaller...

5.2 Stabilizer, Low Efficiency, Tap-A-Draft, Hops, and other thoughts

Thanks for the info guys! I've still got my copy of How To Brew, so I'll need to get back to it and learn more about mash pH. I haven't read it since before I started extract brewing, so I wasn't paying enough attention to AG. I'll look into dunk sparging and read your posts. I'm really...

5.2 Stabilizer, Low Efficiency, Tap-A-Draft, Hops, and other thoughts

Hello everyone! Here is a quick rundown of some other information I've talked about on here, and the thoughts I have right now: 1.) First BIAB resulted in low efficiency. I missed SG Mark by .009 or so. 2.) That brew fermented out well, far more than expected. Nearly made up for the...
