    Coopers Lager...problems

You sure got the fast part right! Monday evening I pitched a packet of their dry yeast on a Coopers Draught kit (with a kilo of DME) at 70 degrees F., and that sucker was finished this morning. Less than 48 hours. I couldn't believe it, so I did some searching here. I hope it's true that these...

    Coopers Lager...problems

From what I read on an Aussie discussion forum, the Coopers Lager kit comes with an ale yeast. That does make sense, since the kit says to ferment at or just under room temps. I have made this kit with the supplied yeast, and it did produce the fruitiness of an ale yeast.

    Brew Pub / Brewery Employment

To add to what has already been said, there was an article in BYO magazine back in December or so, that covered this topic. I don't know if it is online or not.

    Whirlpool - The big How-To

Would a Hop Stopper keep all the crud out just as well?

    Whirlpool - The big How-To

Very nice post! I have been wondering why someone would whirlpool, and then try to use a spigot that draws from the center of a keggle. Makes little sense. Perhaps I won't even put one on mine. Of course, my mash tun and HLT will need spigots (ball valves).... Edited: Looks like I...

    Craft Beer Industry Enjoys Resurgence

Craft Beer Industry Enjoys Resurgence Staff and agencies 27 March, 2006 By CLARKE CANFIELD, 54 minutes ago PORTLAND, Maine - Like most small breweries, Gritty McDuff‘s went through a lull as sales of craft beer leveled off in the late 1990s. Now Gritty‘s and the craft beer industry as a...

getting drunk in bars in texas.....

I hear ya. It's just that I just got back from the grocery store and was in a somewhat ranting mood. I voted for Bush twice, but he is chapping my behind mightily on this issue! ranting mode off/> ;)

I think I want to give wine a shot...

You make a good point. The kit really can't be called complete. I suppose they are trying to make the adding of additional sulfite voluntary (for legal reasons), since some people are allergic to it. Erring on the side of caution and all of that. Yes, I will add the extra 1/4 tsp. It's not...

getting drunk in bars in texas.....

Tejas is right, but you have annexed northern Mexico. There no longer is a Texas (thanks in large part to Jorge Bush). Just ask any of the several million illegal aliens who now have taken up residency here. I can't even walk into many grocery stores around here, without getting the evil eye for...

Bought equipment today - brew next weekend.

With no lid for the pail, six gallon carboy, and the sodium meta-bisulphite, it sounds like this is more of a wine making kit. Quite a few wine makers don't use an air lock on the primary. They just use a cover like you described. That doesn't mean this kit isn't also acceptable to make beer...

I think I want to give wine a shot...

Walker, After asking a similar question over at winepress.us, I went ahead and used One Step on everything, like I do with my beer. Most hard core wine makers, from what I can gather, use potassium metabisulfite, Star San, and Iodophor (in order of preference). There is no magic in using...

    Funky carboy....

How about PBW eating teflon tape? Or does it just like the stuff that binds it to pans? I downloaded the Sunday show from here: http://www.thebrewingnetwork.com/archive.php Haven't listened to all of it yet. I do wish they would quit grab assing so much. Who are those guys...

    Siphoning to the secondary

Not sure if mine is an Easy Siphon, but two pumps will usually get the thing flowing. I have a fairly long siphon hose stuck to it, that drops down and curls around a bit in the bottom of the carboy. The hose certainly needs to be long enough to create good suction. If it is sanitized, it...

I think I want to give wine a shot...

Here is my batch after having been racked into a 6 gallon secondary: I usually keep it covered. It's been in there almost six days. I suppose I'll have to remove a half gallon or so temporarily while I'm doing the degassing, etc. Don't it look purty? :ban:

Fill it up full of PBW (powder brewery wash) and and water let it set overnight. The guy at my LHBS says that stuff will even take scorched areas off of boil kettle bottoms. It's bound to remove anything from glass....

Foggy Mountain Breakdown by Flatt and Scruggs, baby! I used to have a five string banjo. Never did learn to play it very well. Sold it in a garage sale a few years back. I may get another one one of these days. Right now I have a couple of electric guitars. Been reading about brewing and...

Sanke mash tun lid -- anyone ever tried this?

Thanks for the advice. This lid will go on the mash tun. There won't be any heating going on, unless I undershoot my strike temperature, or want to do some step mashing. I'm going to have stainless steel lids for the other two kegs. I have found that lids for five gallon Igloo coolers, are...
