    'Brewery' names...

As far as taking a loss, business vs hobby goes, the answer I got: An activity is presumed for profit if it makes a profit in at least three of the last five tax years, including the current year. The fourth year of a loss would put you in the hobby loss, which is an activity not for profit...

    'Brewery' names...

Osborn Brewing is a registered LLC in Ohio. I took the extra step. What i can write-off now is AMAZING! Pretty much if I talk about beer while spending money it's a business expense. I DO NOT sell alcohol. Yeast, malt and hops and services are all good money makers around here for me...

    Second Batch- Lots of Questions...

+1 for the Beersmith reccomendation, that seems like an extensive hop bill for a light lager. I will probably put this in mine to give a go, it looks delicious! My recommendation on the fruits, pomegranate and lemon - add them a little before the secondary, in fact at the end of the boil, turn...

    Is my starter infected?

You are looking for a yeasty, light beer taste. No bad tastes: acid, banana, band-aids, etc. It's not gonna taste like a proper pale-ale or whatever. "Light, somewhat malty beer" would be a good description of good yeast. Gas is actually easy to scorch or caramelize the sugars/malt...

    Is my starter infected?

It looks like you scorched your malt. Taste it. The wort on the top - use a thief or a baster and grab some wort off the top. If it tastes ok, give the whole thing a swirl, get everything in suspension. Wait 20 mins, this will let the heavier caramalized malt drop out while the yeast stays...

    Yeast Ranching

Bottle Harvesting This process has worked really well for me to harvest yeast from bottle conditioned commercial beers. Bell's, New Belgian, Rogue all bottle condition. Me, being the cheap bastard that I am :), was like HEY! if i am ALREADY buying the yeast, may as well keep it for brewing...

    Yeast Ranching

First, to do this: You MUST be extremely anal about sanitation. I do not say this to be a snob or say 'I am better then you'. We are dealing with unhopped, raw yeast. The chances for infection are EXTREMELY HIGH. That said, RELAX, don't worry, even I can culture yeast! Second: The beers I...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Bourbon Vanilla Porter (AG)

The night before you rack, pour your bourbon, I use Jim Beam, over 2 ounces of oak chips for wine making. Dump this whole slurry into your secondary with the vanilla. The "oak-wood aging" gives you a taste and drinkability... ahhh I'm plagiarizing!!! Anyways, this is an AWESOME beer...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Brewed 5 gallons of Lawnmower Ale, yesterday. And 5 gallons of Fat Tire Clone today. Should be good to go to the lake! :) Putting off cleaning up...

    Am I bottle harvesting wrong?

Are you boiling the malt? What are you covering the bowl with?
  15. OsbornBrewing

    Wow...Now that's a light beer

Thanks Jay! That's simple enough to give a go this weekend! Did you top up to 5 gallons in the primary? Or is this ~4 gal batch? I have been looking for a tasty 'lawn mowing' beer, my Dad insists on keeping MGD at the lakehouse for that purpose and it's killing my rep! ;)

    Burner help

Just wanted to say thanks for the informative replies! I got the flame adjusted. And headed to home depot to see if I couldn't fab a windscreen, some 6" ductwork seemed to do the trick: Cranked up this thing now roars like a jet engine, and at a simmer with a blow dryer 1' away I could not...
