    Mash pH papers

Hi! Is my pH papers just "broken/old" something like that or whats going on? I use tap water, and in Finland, "country of thousand lakes" we have very good and soft water. So our tap water is treated with lime or chalk or something to raise pH to above 8 for preveting corrosion. Today I tested...

Have you ever forgot the bag?

I just read post about this, theres actually some guys who do this. They mash in the kettle without bag, then pour mash through bag to another vessel. What I was worried was splashing (hotside aeration) but other than that, if you are gentle enough. Why not? Just extra work.

    Low efficiency?

Oh just googled... It seems that since I'm no sparge BIAB brewer, my grains can be pulverized. :D Or atleast finer is better. Luckily I have old blender which hopefully can do the second crush for my grains. Cheers!

    Low efficiency?

So my next investment would be own grain mill? This hobby isn't going to be cheap one... :D Or I need to ask for LHBS guys to do finer crush for me. Thats judt odd, because I know these guys are somewhat pro-brewers and should know good average crush size for every grain. I don't know really...

    Low efficiency?

Tested my pH twice, so not sure if my pH papers are incorrect or what. My grains comes already grinded in LHBS for amount I need (I know these guys grind grains only when they get order in) and they were grinded 3 days ago. I stirred mash only once, so maybe that's one thing I should improve...

    Low efficiency?

Hi! I know theres tens of these posts, but everyone has their own story and problem and how to solve it. My problem was today, when brewing hefeweizen, I got only 55% efficiency! I use Brewersfriend software for calculations and it said my efficiency dropped from normal 70% to 55%. First, my...

    First Experience in LoDO BIAB

I have one question, which is related to this topic, but opposite of low oxygenation. What effects would it have to beer, if you aerate your wort over 80F (85-90F), and then let it cool to 70F? I mean by this, that you are in a hurry, u dont own IC, so u do ice bath, which takes forever to cool...

    Undercarbonated bottles?

Thanks for replies. I primed with dextrose 64g to 9 liter (2.5 gallon). I dissolved it to about 3 dl water (over 1 cup) and poured on to beer and mixed gently. I couldnt hear any hiss from opening 2 of those. I used DME only once, calculated too little (70g to 10 liter) and they have little...

    Undercarbonated bottles?

Hi! I have now done 3 batches of homebrew, and while first batch was under carbonated because of not enough priming sugar (DME), and second batch went well, my third batch seems to be under carbonated. Aimed to 2.5 vol CO2, let bottles to sit on 24C temp for 2 weeks and its completely flat...

    Color calculation

You can adjust colors. Or add new ingredient and input color, potential extract, and name and type of ingredient. I did that, and used EBC specs. Im on same impression that my grain bill is low on dark malts, but not sure how much is too much? Im not a fan of bitter/burnt taste, so want that to...

    Color calculation

Hi! Im trying to clone Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, and while I have been using Brewersfriend calculator and adding ingredients in EBC color (because Europe), I add only 100g (3.5 oz) of Roasted Barley (1600 EBC) and 100g Chocolate malt (3.5 oz, 1180 EBC), for 9 liter (2.5 gallon) batch with 3.4...

    Priming calculators what to believe?

Each priming calculators give different amounts of sugars to use. Seriously how is this possible, when it's math and science, not something you would just made up. And Im talking about 1 gram difference/litre, and especially when trying to calculate priming with DME, differences are huge...

    Bottle capper question INART

Hi guys! Total newbie here, and since I got half of my brewing equipment from my dad, including old bottle capper, I was wondering if anyone knows is there any difference between mine INART bottle capper and new "designs" sold in markets today. I have old INART bottle capper, and it has a...

    Fermentation stuck?

Hi! Im brewing my first BIAB brew, a belgian witbier. My OG was 1.052 and using Mangrove Jacks M21 dry yeast. I rehydrated it, and fermenting started nicely, there was thick krausen on top of my beer, but 3 days later it was gone?? Now at fifth day I opened fermenter and took gravity test, it...
