    Primary Explosion!

It must be something in the water... I had to mop the ceiling, kitchen, closet, and two walls this week from an A-BOMB brew... Good luck with your cleaning efforts

    Welcome to the spackle club

I refitted the bung on and used some hose that I sanitized for racking and put it into my beaker that I normally make my starters with full of bleach. Now I just gotta clean up the mess. I kinda had a feeling it was gonna happen. When I made my starter, it over flowed and was very aggressive...

    Welcome to the spackle club

I have had my official blow out last night and feel like I'm now in the club. To see the face on my fiance was priceless... Question, my beer was without airlock for about 3 hours before I woke up this morning. There was a very steady flow of foam out of the top of the car boy. The evidence...

    New Obsession: La Maudite (Unibroue)

I love La Maudite. As a matter of fact, it was the beer that opened my eyes past the typical american beers... The guy at my LHBS gave me this recipe and said that he tried it and it was very very very close to Maudite. 5.5 lb 55% Pilsener Malt 2.5 lb 25% Munich Malt 1.0 lb 10%...

    First starter

Yesterday I made my first yeast starter for today's brew. I did the 2 to 1 mix on some DME amber and have some bubbling going on. Should it have formed a big head in the beaker or is the fermentation of the starter not as aggressive as normal beer. The DME is an amber, "forgot to look and...

    To harvest the yeast

I got it now... I am fixing to do a 4 batch back to back and am going to get my yeast from the LHBS and use what I get out of my first primary to do the other three. Now for my final question on this matter... I harvest the yeast, put it into a mason jar and into the fridge it goes... How...

    To harvest the yeast

I'm doing my primary in a 6.5 gallon carboy and a 5 gallon for my secondary... As a matter of fact, next time I make it to my LHBS i might get an additional 5 gallon so I will have a backup for when I do my barley wine. I did some reading and checked out the links and think I have a good...

Lid On or Off the brewpot?

The only boilover I have experience was when I put the lid on a full 5 gallon boil. I'd leave if off for the most part... I have found that I can get my wort boiling faster though if I put the lid on until I get the roll... Once you toss in your first set of hops, it's dangerous to the...

    Weird Smell?

I've gotten to the point now where I love to keep my nose right by the air lock during peak fermentation cause I love the smell of my army of millions making the crusade on my behalf to convert the sugar into sweet alchohol... I have caught myself staring at the air lock when there are like 6...

    No bubbles yet

From what I have read and done, that might be a tad bit too low of a temp. I have had excellent results from holding my primary at about 72F before the fermentation takes off.. If your doing like I have, once it takes off your temp will go up about 4 to 6 degrees F then settle back down... My...

    To harvest the yeast

Well, this is what I tried to do... I transferred the beer from the primary to the secondary using my one pump primer <best purchase so far> and had my trub sludge in the bottom of the carboy. I tried a balancing act of having the carboy upside down while trying to catch the yeast in a steril...

    Weird Smell?

Your probably smelling the trub/yeast combo with possible some hops that have settled out... So long as the beer smells good in the secondary fermenter or the bottling bucket it should be ok.... I"ve only got 4 brews under my belt right now but I think I know what your saying... Smells kinda...

    No bubbles yet

My second batch of beer took close to 36 hour to kick off.... I wouldn't panic. Sometimes you get some yeast that are slow to fire off. My first batch took like 24 hours to start also. I started making starters and get it go ferment in 6 to 12 now. Honestly, I wouldn't worry until 72 hours...

    To harvest the yeast

Well, I have been reading and see the forums on washing, and so fourth. I kinda have a good handle on what the pricess is for taking care of the yeast once it's out of the carboy. My problem is, getting it out of the car boy. My last two batches I made two attemtps using some of my custom...

    To harvest the yeast

With 4 brews under my belt using the brewers best kits, I'm fixing to move over to the all grain side of the tracks. I also want to attempt to harvest yeast for batches to try and tweak my brews. What is the method that is easiest and most effective in getting the yeast out of a 6.5 gallon...

    12 Hour Lag Time Normal?

The first brew I made took almost 24hr's to fire up. So long as it's bubbling away now, your good to go

    Brewing on PDA

I am doing good with my first two batches. I had a beer tasting party saturday night that few people remember but that is what was expected. :mug: My question of the day is brewing software. I have a few demo's for PC that I have been playing with and have been playing with different...

    Ready to try something different

hahaha I love the smell your own fart quote. I figure anyone who has brewed beyond a kit is experienced more than I am. I've been checking out the links and have been given alot of info. My next batch I brew I think is going to be an original from my own head. The one batch that I just...

    Ready to try something different

That is what I am going for, to make my own beer. I figured the Kits were a good way to start out. They have given me a sort of blue print. Now, when you say extract+specialty grain, how is that different from what I have been doing with the kits?
