Another stupid BS question, Last Ver that works on Win XP 32 bit?

Running /any/ OS that doesn't get security updates is a terrible idea. It isn't about going to safe websites. Your machine has vulnerabilities that can be exploited transparently, without your knowledge, and automatically while it's up. In the old days, you'd get a virus that's job was to...

    Bottles

It doesn't? I haven't had a good one yet... But seriously, I've read that corona go through pains to use hop extracts and hop like compounds to reduce the problem. If that's true then the comparison may not work. To get bottles, I dropped off a six pack of home made beer to a buddy, asked for...

    Starter question...

I agree with everyone here.. There are so many variables already in play, that your job with a starter is to try and just get within the ballpark. It's certainly not precise and doesn't even consider ambient temperature, etc. So to answer your question, I wouldn't sweat it :)

    Explosive fermentation

+1 to the blowoff tube idea, and for checking the bottom of your airlock. I ended up buying a carboy cap so I can get a bigger opening to my tube... but then I ended up never using it as I got scared of glass and switched to a SS fermenter (yes, I know I'm a wimp) with a blow-off tube kit...

    Tell me about pH meters

I went the pH meter route first... They're not cheap, the probes wear out, and the thing requires special care (eg probe storage solution). I moved back to ph strips.

Why do you homebrew? Are people nuts?

I think my motivation comes from growing up living heavily off the land. Looking at a batch of beer bottled, sitting in crates in 50 odd bottles, is such a great feeling - like you've prepared for winter. Reminds me of the crates of home-made jam, or bottled moose meat, or whatever, that we'd...

Can I pitch yeast at higher temps if I'm quickly cooling or should I wait to pitch?

If I think about it, I fill my 20L bucket nearly twice to chill 5gal, and my groundwater is cooler, so that's 40L or about 8/9 gal. My immersion chiller is homemade and has a small inner coil and wide outter one, but it's not very deep. I run it really slow and agitate the chiller constantly...

Can I pitch yeast at higher temps if I'm quickly cooling or should I wait to pitch?

If you actually read their post, they said counter flow chiller....

Can I pitch yeast at higher temps if I'm quickly cooling or should I wait to pitch?

This is of course obvious, but I have avoided buying a pump to recirculate because I didn't want to buy a second chiller to put in the ice bath... but what you said is so much simpler lol - just recirculate the water, only one chiller, in the wort. I think I'll get myself a cheap aquarium...

Does airlock bubbling after FG reached means ferm still happening?

I always note both the SG and BRIX noted on mine. All my converters always tell me they're the same thing, so I guess mine is fine that way. A good way to check the conversion factor for yours, is to: - calibrate your refractometer with your base tap water (some use distilled water). This takes...

Does airlock bubbling after FG reached means ferm still happening?

yeah, as everyone else said. Basically CO2 dissolved in the liquid can come out for ages. especially if it starts to warm up a little. As for refractometer vs hydrometer, I bought a refractometer years ago and absolutely love it. There are several concerns that people raise.. the biggest ones...

First time use of a wort chiller?

I do the same as above. Never cleaned inside. I hose it down with high pressure after using and before putting it in, and let it sanitize with 15 minutes left. I use vinyl tubing attached to mine and have never had melting issues.

    Will it smell?

I have fermented beer and cider in smaller spaces. It won't be that bad. probably. It's pretty mild. Why on earth would you use baker's yeast? I started with rootbeer making and baker's yeast. It's terrible. For rootbeer I switched to champagne yeast which made a world of difference... It's...

Got a free chest freezer. Clean it or sell/scrap it?

My old ferm chamber (now broken) was rusty and moldy when I got it. I took an orbital sander to it, and bought some trem-clad appliance spray paint. That stuff was amazing. I'm no quality painter, and it dried evenly and smooth, non tacky (I forget how many coats I did). That inside stayed...

    First batch screw up

I also started small batches for the same reason.. and I still don't really drink more than 3 beer a week. However, I find that beer lasts a lot longer than I expected in the bottle, especially heavier / darker beers - some of them get /better/ over time and not get old. Between giving some away...

    First batch screw up

I'm quite sure it's fine.. and hell, even a minor infection or off taste - who cares! It's homemade beer!

Did I just ruin the batch?

I used to believe tap water was clean enough. I'd top off with tap water and use tap water to get my siphon started. I don't do that now, but none of those beers were infected.

    First batch screw up

I'd say overall you can be a little more relaxed about many of the things you mentioned - beer is pretty tough. The biggest one that scares me is infection. Top off is just one more chance at infection so I would have just avoided it and had a slightly stronger beer, no harm. If the temp was...

    Racking time

I didn't watch the video, but I didn't have an auto-siphon for years (result: just buy the auto-siphon). I used to put no-rinse sanitizer in my line by spraying it in while holding it up, then drop it fast to get a good siphon started. Never used my mouth. Don't do that. bad idea.

    Beginner brew equipment

This- I started with a very cheap kit. I even bought no-boil pre-made wort (I think it was a brewhouse kit). Don't worry about the chilling, yeast starters, blah blah blah. If you can pay attention to being clean and sanitizing (two different things) your beer will be just fine. The problem...
