    10 Gallon Cooler Opinions

    Has it warped yet?

Cheap & Easy 10 Gallon Rubbermaid MLT Conversion

Are you going to be doing batch or fly sparging? I wanted to get into fly sparging but the SS mesh seemed like such a cheap and easy way to make it. I wonder if fly sparging would work with a longer SS mesh that was made into a loop. Does anyone know if it would be more effective to use that...

Definitive answer to safety of #5 pp buckets?

I tried finding food grade buckets at supermarkets with no luck. Then I found out a classmate worked at a ice cream shop. He gave me 4 buckets so far. He says that they throw them away all the time. I would look for an ice cream shop that makes their own ice cream.

    pure maltodextrin?

Are you sure it makes it sweeter and maltier? I've used maltodextrin in my sports drink to bump up the carbs. I don't think it changes the taste of the drink.

    Cleaning/sanitizing Bottles

Is the heated drying cycle hot enough to sanitize the bottles? This would eliminate the use of star san and a vinator. I didn't want to fork out 20 for the vinator.

    Yeast harvesting - a NON-slant method

I was wondering if its possible to make the wort without the pressure cooker. The point of the pressure cooker is to kill the wild yeast or bacteria right. I was thinking of making the wort and putting them into the jars with loosely fitted lids. Then I would put the jars in a pot of simmering...

What do you guys think about sucrose as a priming sugar? Reason for asking because it's readily available and cheap

Using the same yeast for two brews, is this starter yeast procedure ok?

Many brewery re-pitch yeast but they also do an acid wash to get rid of any unwanted bacteria. I guess I'm paranoid about unwanted microbes. I'll take your advice and reuse the washed yeast. Although the people on the reviews for my extract said to keep the beer in the fermenter for 3 weeks...

Using the same yeast for two brews, is this starter yeast procedure ok?

The reason why I want to do this is because I'm a new brewer and want to strive for consistency. If the yeast ferment better or different on different generations, my brews won't be as consistent. My brewing prof did say that yeast can be reused up to six times before they get too old so I'm...

Using the same yeast for two brews, is this starter yeast procedure ok?

@Farmboy. I want to use yeast that hasn't fermented a whole batch of beer. I think it will be more consistent this way. I will save the yeast cake in case though. @William. I was planning to brew the 2nd brew like 2 weeks later. The first brew only takes about 3 weeks to ferment, no secondary...

    Taking Samples with Spigot

Sorry for the confusion, I mean to ask if using the spigot is easier to bottle beers than using the auto siphon. I wanted to use a cheap home depot bucket as a bottling bucket.

Using the same yeast for two brews, is this starter yeast procedure ok?

Ok, so I'm making two brews with the same yeast. I wanted to make a bigger start yeast than needed so that I could have some extra yeast to put in the fridge for the next batch. According to mymalty, I need 1 liter of starter yeast. My plans were to make 1.5 liters of starter yeast to save .5...

    Taking Samples with Spigot

If you are brewing using a bottling bucket, could you just use the auto siphon the beer to a cheap 5 gal #1 bucket and then auto siphon that into the bottle? My question is if using a spigot is that much easier than using an auto siphon.

Why not Dilute strong beer to make MORE beer?

I didn't mean to offend anyone but I'm just reiterating what I've been taught from my brewery professor. I'm not sure if what he's saying is all correct or it could be his opinion. What I meant to get across was that my professor feels that it's not all about the dextrins. He feels that dilution...

    Cheap DIY Fermentor

Does anyone know if a bucket with a lid is considered ok to use if the lid isn't air tight?

    Cheap DIY Fermentor

Darn, mines says number 7 "other". I looked at some buckets that I bought from OSH and its #2. But the lids arent air tight. What do you guys think about this as a fermentation bucket?

Why not Dilute strong beer to make MORE beer?

I know companies will do high specific gravity brewing and then dilute because its more efficient and they can make different abv like you said but "proper" companies put more malt, hops, adjuncts, and yeast into the wort. But with bud light, there's fermentation of dextrins which is different...

    Did I kill my wort??

I think you will be fine because there's a crap load of yeast in there. If any bacteria got in there, it will have a hard time with all the competition.
