    Why not degas beer?

I've only made wine/mead so far but my first batch of beer is ready to rack this afternoon (making a kit that wants cacao nibs added in a secondary.) I use an All-in-one vacuum pump to rack my mead and use a short racking cane to help with degassing during transfers...why not use it for my beer...

Why a ball valve for sampling on fermenter's? (SS Brewtech)

Yup it appears Spike's will have a better valve. Just wondering why SS Brewtech doesn't improve on their design on the brewmaster.

Why a ball valve for sampling on fermenter's? (SS Brewtech)

I've been looking pretty hard at the SS Brewtech Chronical Brewmaster for my first conical because I like the idea of the more sanitary nature of the butterfly valves. I can't figure out why they still used a ball valve for the sampling port. Isn't this just asking for a problem/infection...

Making Strawberry Wine - Liqueur first?

I just finished preparing 20 pounds of strawberries for some strawberry wine. In my recipe searching I've found some people advise mixing all ingredients (except yeast) for 24 hours to allow the pectic enzymes to do their work but others such as this one...

    Racked too soon...next step?

It is clear enough to read through presently but I don't have a CO2 tank to be able to flood with. Would you still rack it before bottling or just bottle from the secondary and avoid the lees?

    Racked too soon...next step?

I went ahead and used Sparkcolloid and the mead has cleared right up! Nice big yeast cake on the bottom now and crystal clear mead above. Should I siphon right to bottles being careful not to disturb the sediment or am I better off to siphon to something else (carboy/bottling bucket) and then...

    Racked too soon...next step?

Thanks for the recommendation. A friend of mine recommended I flood the carboy with C02 from a tank prior to racking. Is this a good idea or unnecessary? Would picking up another 5 gallon be advisable rather than using the 6 again?

    Racked too soon...next step?

I'm making my first mead and its been fermenting since the beginning of January. I racked to secondary after 3 weeks per recipe instructions (and the fact the fermentation seemed to have slowed dramatically) but after deciding to move the secondary carboy to a taller stand in a warmer room...

IO-Star Iodophor - Change in concentrations?

That was what I have done so far as well (1 ounce to 5 gallons for 25ppm). I've seem some discussion that it needs to be rinsed at this concentration despite the bottle saying otherwise. Just trying to figure fact from opinion. I am assuming you aren't rinsing at this concentration correct?

IO-Star Iodophor - Change in concentrations?

My bottle of IO-Star Iodophor shows to use 25ppm concentration and to simply air dry without rinsing. However, I see lots of references on here regarding a 12.5 ppm concentration is recommended but there is no instruction for that dilution on the bottle The only place I can find reference to...

IO-Star Iodophor - Change in concentrations?

Just starting to brew and my IO-Star says to mix to 25ppm according to the bottle for beverage containers (1 oz to 5 gallons.) I see people on this forum referencing mixing to "12.5ppm as directed on the bottle" or list the ppm as a range from 12.5 to 25ppm. Did they used to recommend a lower...
