    My reserves are being depleted...

I usually have too much on hand. My dad and I LOVE beer, but don't drink that many between the two of us. What really sticks, though, are the beers that came out so-so. They take forever to deplete.

Beer Philosophy - "Good" Beer and Samuel Adams

Yeah! I mean this is exactly what I was thinking when I posed the question, but I should've known it would become a thread about how taste in beer is subjective. The true question is, when you taste the best beer you've ever had, can you still imagine one better?

Beer Philosophy - "Good" Beer and Samuel Adams

I used to love everything that Samuel Adams made. Like many people, the beers they make were my stepping stones into the craft beer universe. But now, after having tried other beers and having made my own, I find the Samuel Adams beers to be a bit bland in comparison. My question is: Is...

First time apple cider - two questions

Calder: Mine is also Whole Foods 365 apple juice. How long does it tend to take till it's done fermenting? How long for aging?

First time apple cider - two questions

The OG was 1.053, and didn't add any sugar. I'll check out the Lalvin yeast, sounds better than British Ale yeast, but it's what I had on hand because I'm brewing up a brown ale this weekend. The Lalvin you get is dehydrated? That sounds good, because it's on hand whenever you need it. I always...

First time apple cider - two questions

    1. Bought a gallon jug of Whole Foods organic apple juice and pitched half a vile of WLP005 (British Ale yeast) per recommendation from my local homebrew supply shop worker. Has anyone done this? How did it come out? 2. May be a silly question, but hydrometers work for any liquid, right? What...

Oatmeal Honey Brown Recipe - Help!

Grain Bill: 6 lb Two Row ½ lb American White Wheat ½ lb Honey Malt ½ lb Quaker Quick Oats ½ lb Crystal 60 ¼ lb Chocolate Malt My local homebrew supply shop doesn't have any Honey Malt. Any ideas on replacements? Not sure what they do have. Could I skip it and go with 1/2 lb of extra...

Overcarbonated beer - not the usual circumstances

Guys thank you for your responses, and sorry about being unclear. Malkore: I included the temp of the beer (which I forget) in the calculator, so I would assume the calculator was accurate in that sense. It was 4.5 gallons of an OG 1.046 Amber Ale, bottled at 1.011. I used 4.2 ounces of...

Overcarbonated beer - not the usual circumstances

Our beer was done fermenting, 100% sure of this. We did not over-prime the beer, we used a priming calculator and scale. But our beer is over-carbonated. Could it be that we opened it up when it was still somewhat warm? What else could we be missing? Thanks.

    Bottling - How Much Beer?

Thanks guys, this was super helpful. I've got the bottling wand so I'll take that advice, thanks. Happy brewing!

    Bottling - How Much Beer?

Gonna bottle my 5th batch tomorrow. I've always filled the bottles up to the beginning of the neck. Can I fill them higher? My worry is that they'll pop their tops. How about an inch from the top of the bottle, halfway between the beginning of the neck and the top? Thanks! PS - anybody...

Beer Philosophy - What is it about homebrewing...

You never hear homebrewers talking about a great industrial light lager they once had. What is it about homebrewing that gets people into great craft beer?

    Microbrewery/brewpub set-up photos

Does anybody know of any photo albums, blogs, or videos that chronicle brewpub or microbrewery builds/set-ups/constructions? Not looking to build one, just very curious as to how it is all put together from scratch. Thanks!

Help with recipe formulation - bananas and brown sugar

My girlfriend's grandfather brought some "bien me save" from Nicaragua and I thought about making a beer with some of it's subtle flavor. Bien me save is a very simple snack. It's fried green plantains sliced thin (the size of those crispy potato sticks that look like french fries) tossed in a...

    ABV Issue

Not sure about getting any sugar from the grains, but nontheless, what you say makes sense Calder. The first batch was a 5 gallon batch, and came out to about 4.5% ABV, which is accurate with what you say the OG would've been. With the second batch of 6 gallons, the OG you said is nearly spot...

    ABV Issue

After spending some time thinking about reasons why the ABV might be lower than the previous nearly identical batch, I think I figured it out. So simple... The first batch came out to 5 gallons exactly, while the second was a 6 gallon batch. This seems to be the reason, especially since the...

    ABV Issue

Hmm interesting. My only source of fermentables was the extract. I guess this brew is just a lighter one. I made the exact same recipe except with 6lb. of AMBER (medium) liquid extract, and it came out stronger (between 4-5 i think). Maybe the lighter extract has less fermentables? what do you...
