    Grain absorption rate, flaked barley?

Did my 2nd all grain brewday this past Sunday, dry irish stout. 9.975lg total grain with 1.5 lb flaked barley in that total. I used .125gal/lb absorbtion (first time i used .1 and was a little low) plus .25gal dead space. That gave me 4.75gal strike water to get about 3.25gal first runnings...

Use of Irish moss with flaked barley?

Getting ready to do my 1st all grain stout. I know that we add flaked barley to provide protein for head retention and body. I have been using whirlfloc/moss which I think is supposed to coagulate and remove proteins. I assume I should then leave it out of this brewday? T

    Irish stout question

I adjusted it as follow upping the Flaked barley, and hops, and decreasing the carapils and chocolate malt. I also scaled it to 5.5gal. I didn't know carapils adds sweetness, thought it didn't give any flavor? Any opinions on the new recipe: 6 lbs 9.7 oz Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 1...

    All grain recipes

I just devirginized myself the past weekend and did my first all grain batch. Really fun. I was just wondering where most all grain brewers get recipes from? Are there any really good reliable sources that most people use. Thanks, T

    Conical fermenter ???s

So my wife (Irish, likes beer, scotch and wine, and enjoys brewing) wants to buy me a conical fermenator for my birthday. Since I don't have room for a fridge big enough to put it in I was thinking of going with the morebeer 7.5g with the temp controller. I was wondering if anyone has used...

    Cold crash question

So I am cold crashing for the first time , and the airlock is moving in reverse sucking air back into the carboy. I understand the physics of it but don't like it. It is obviously sucking air with O2 back into my carboy. I suppose since CO2 is heavier than air, there will still be a blanket...

    Batch sparge question

Getting ready to do my 1st all grain and have a couple questions to any who wish to chime in.-(Denny?). Be gentle, this is my first time. I am going to do a batch sparge. From my research it seems that many people will mash at a certain water/grain ratio, then calculate and add additional...

    Stout , nitrogen tap

So after having a wonderful creamy guinness in a pub last night, I have decided to buy a nitrogen set up for one of the taps on my kegerator. I am still a new extract brewer and have not brewed a stout or porter yet. I was wondering if anyone had a good extract recipe or kit that they have made...
