    Dry lager yeast question

Update: keg is almost done. It fermented a bit warm when I tried for a d-rest and has a slight buttery smell(which bothers me) but tastes great. I should have left it ferment longer before d-rest. When I took it out, it fermented fast and furious at about 65. Oh well. Live, learn, and drink...

    Plate Chiller or new immersion

I aerate like crazy with my drill paddle once it's cooled. I didn't know it was okay while it was chilling though. I have a feeling that my new chiller and knowing that I can whirlpool with a spoon is going to chill my boils down WAY faster. Thanks! Also, I try to keep my yeast as happy as...

    Plate Chiller or new immersion

So I can just start the whirlpool with a sanitized spoon then? I have been afraid of oxidizing the wort. No need to worry?

    Plate Chiller or new immersion

I also plan on building the Whirlpool attachment someday. I need to take baby steps because I'm married, so I can't go crazy buying equipment all t once. the equipment I have is good enough, but in most cases better equipment= better beer.

    first AG

I would add the full pound, possibly pound AND a half of rice hulls. I've done two hefes- one 50/50 wheat/pils and one 60/40 wheat/pils. More rice hulls makes for an easier sparge and doesn't have an effect on efficiency that I'm aware of.

    Plate Chiller or new immersion

I ended up buying a heavy duty 1/2'' by 50' immersion chiller. It's more than double what I have now and I'm only doing 5 gallon batches. I don't have the cash for a pump at this time and wanted something simple to use/clean. I'll stick with the immersions for now. Thanks for the advice!

    Plate Chiller or new immersion

Hi everyone, I need a more efficient chiller. I made my old immersion chiller out 25ft of 3/8 in copper tubing. I'm not very good at building things. It works but I really need something more efficient. I do 5 gallon full boil batches. Would you recommend a plate chiller or a new immersion...

    Pliny: to secondary or not?

I was considering doing the same thing to catch any hop particles. I can't wait to see how it turns out this Thursday.

    Pliny: to secondary or not?

Update: I just did my second round of dry hopping. I had decided to leave it in the primary. I think I detected a slight cidery scent. I'll take another hydrometer reading when I keg it in 5 days. We'll see! The sample I had last week was tasting great.

How many licks does it take?

Ow long does it typically take you or you and your friends/significant other to finish drinking your 5 gallon batch? It usually takes us about 3-4 weeks which is nice because something new is usually ready to go in the keg! The fastest brew I had go was my Pumpkin Ale which went in four days...

    Drunk

I NEED to do another MO smash. My only MO smash turned out terrible because I lost most of a vial of WLP001 and the starter was weak.

    Drunk

Drunk on my own Noble Pils. I swear my beers are getting ready for competition. This is the best hobby ever! I enjoy my some of my own beers more than anything I can buy.

    coconut in my nut brown

Or do what I do and add a shot of coconut rum to each glass of your finished beer ;) I made a porter and my buddy and I added shots to the finished product! It was awesome! I'll be adding it directly to the keg next time.

    Pliny: to secondary or not?

Update: I checked the gravity and it's 1.011. I decided to start dry hopping in primary instead of risking oxidation plus I'm lazy. Sample tasted good. Lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue. It doesn't have hop aroma at all right now. I'm thinking it's going to turn out great after two...

    White Labs tube exploded?

Happened to me too. I managed to get some into my starter, but not enough. My beer turned out awful.

    Pliny: to secondary or not?

Vinny said in his article that there is a greater potential of oxidation in big hoppy beers like DIPAs when transferring. He suggested flushing all lines and secondary with CO2, but I don't know how to do that. I have CO2 tanks but have only used them to push my kegs. I'm afraid of oxidizing...

    Pliny: to secondary or not?

Pliny is fermenting like crazy and my basement smells like a hop forest! The recipe says to dry hop in secondary for two weeks in two stages. I haven't done secondary in a year or so in favor of the long primary. Is secondary beneficial/useful in this case for dry hopping? Or should I just dry...

    IPA stuck at 1.041

Mashing a 160 is going to produce a lot of unfermentables. I don't know how much further you'll take it down.
